Yes, it's that time again! We haven't done one of these in a while. We're having a contest!

The form: short story (between 1,000 and 20,000 words).
The theme: "The End Of The World" (asteroid, zombie apocalypse, God gets pissed, whatever)
    The deadline: 30 September 2009

Kyle has agreed to collect and post the stories so that the authors will be anonymous until the winner is announced. You can email him your entries at admkyle@gmail.com. The submissions will be posted for reading and voting for two weeks, until 15 October. Word would probably be the best format, but PDF or whatever will work.

The prize: A box of Exaclair stationery goodies. Contents are as follows -

2 bottles of J. Herbin fountain pen ink, 30 ml
    Perle Noire (Black)
    Poussiere de Lune (Purple/Lavender)
    J. Herbin fountain pen ink color chart

    Rhodia products
    2010 datebook, 4x6
    Webnotebook, 3.5x5.5, 90g lined, 96 sheets
    Notepad no 16, 5.5x8.3, 80g lined, staplebound, 80 sheets
    Notepad no 14, 4.3x6.7, 80g lined, staplebound, 80 sheets

    Notepad no 10, 2x2.9, 80g lined, staplebound, 80 sheets
    Notebook, 2.9x4.5, 80g quadrille, staplebound, 24 sheets
    2 Clic bloc mousepad/notepads, 7.5x9, 80g quadrille, staplebound, 30 sheets

    Clairefontaine products
Pupitre notepad, 8.25x11.75, 90g lined, staplebound, 80 sheets
Pupitre notebook, 4.25x6.75, 90g lined, spiralbound, 80 sheets
Douccur de l’ecriture notebook, 4x5.8, 90g lined, spiralbound

Rhodia and Clairefontaine papers are known around the world for their smooth, perfect surface and overall quality.

Anyone who wants to donate additional prizes in the spirit of making this more fun, PM me with your contribution.

You have a little over two months. Get writing!

You should be able to save a file as a txt. Maybe rtf, depending on how old your version of WordPerfect is.

    Sounds like fun!
Unfortunately, I'm currently knee-deep in developing
    "Columbine - The Musical". :)

I'll probably get depressed if due to being second choice for everyone (apparently), I end up with 0 votes again :(

Then again, it's not like I have a job so....

Try to think of it this way: the fun is in the creating; winning a prize is just icing on the cake.

end of the world? Isn't that a little grandiose for a short story?

Depends. TEOTWAWKI means different things to different people. Losing a child in a fatal car accident could be the end of the world to a doting mother, for example.

Then there's the Zombie apocalypse... :tasvir:

I think they called that one, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, still packing them in at the midnight madness showings.

We've had only one entry in the contest. Therefore, the deadline is extended to 15 October. Those of you who "came close", you now have two more weeks. Git'r done!!

Whoever got their entry in on time should win by default, not be penalized for being the only one to follow the rules.

Everyone else should start at 2nd place and go from there.

    Really good job, Paladin.

A very creative approach to the assigned topic.

    I liked the silent K.
This is from the Russian language, which may be significant.

Nova: I read your story and thought it was terrific. I think, with the various threads and characters you have in it, you could expand it into a novel.
