That’s fine, but those people are likely to nominate him again. Everyone knows Christie is a never-Trumper so it’s not likely he’s going to go far so the people donating to his campaign are equally stupid.

Only if Trump gets the nomination. If Trump doesn't get the nomination (and who knows what will happen between now and then, he and Biden are both elderly), then Christie's got a shot at a cabinet gig or a cushy ambassador job. And it's a $1.6 million haul. Individuals are capped at how much they can give to a campaign in an election cycle. I think the total's like $2,500. That's nothing for somebody worth millions. So, if Trump gets the nomination, they're not out anything that they'd even notice. If he doesn't, then they've got a toe-in with at least one of the other camps and they can use that to leverage their influence with whomever winds up getting the nomination.
