Yes, clearly we can trust the Taliban to uphold their diplomatic commitments. Your naivete is absolutely stunning. They'll simply go from overt to covert support for the near future. We'll see how it plays from there.
People are grabbing onto departing US aircraft in desperation, and falling off after takeoff. https://www.dailywire.com/news/brea...NZr5r3hoUOAVa6gugUpSiVo28MsY2JBVAeW4wlIbpqaIo Holy fuck.
What really fucks me off is that the US Government could have given me 1/1000th of what they splurged on this "war" to me - Afghanistan would still be as fucked, but I'd be a billionaire. Someone's winning. Military Industrial something something. Is it wrong to wish the US would just drop a mercy nuke on Afghanistan and scare the shit out of everyone (in particular China)? It is? Eh.
The CIA really fucked this one up. It's now apparent that the Taliban had preplanned their offensive years ago. Why not? Trump stated when he ran in 2016 that he would remove all US troops. They had negotiated with many local officials and had pre-staged military forces throughout the country. In most cases, the local officials are simply handing over cities to them without a fight. The intelligence had no idea that this would happen. Clearly the Afghani leadership didn't believe they could oppose the Taliban without US help.
Oddly, I agree with this. Also, definitely don't understand why the right is upset about this. I mean, this is the Islamic version of the America you are trying to put in place - @Paladin, @Forbin, @oldfella1962. That's why you voted for trump, isn't it?
Not sure how many read the thread, but the entire thing is worth reading. Lots of good info, most from DoD. Basically we are sending 6k troops to hold the airport until at least Aug 31 (when Biden said all US troops would pull out) and will be running continual air lift ops to take pretty much everyone. Once out of country they will then sort American, SIV, P-1 and P-2 folks.
Also, slightly off topic but I want to give major props to the Lutherans (listening to someone in their refugee org on NPR now). Not sure what it is but they are heavily involved in refugee resettlement. They are the reason the upper Midwest and Seattle area have the largest concentrations of East Africans: lots of Scandinavians/Lutherans. On a light hearted note in a horrible thread:
I would absolutely support a Canadian mission like that, since America has proven itself a useless and untrustworthy "ally" once again. Too bad you idiots pulled out with zero planning without finding some responsible adults willing to take over first.
Fuck off - you guys made the choice to invade, made the choice to run things poorly for 20 years and then made the choice to withdraw. You aren't immune to criticism by any stretch of the imagination, no matter how much you wish it so
Outside of VICE News and maybe Vox have any US outfits been doing legit journalism in Afghanistan? CNN, Fox, NBC, ABC et al are falling all over themselves to describe this as the Saigon moment and blame everyone but themselves. They aided and abetted this ridiculous 20 year war. They refused to take Bush, Obama, Trump, and every major defense contractor to task. Disgraceful.
Well, it's fairly clear by now that there have been a lot of lies told about Afghanistan, and that can't happen without a compliant media. Probably that.
I seem to recall this issue being covered quite extensively. And if blame should go to anyone it should be the millions of people that supported this venture. Particularly after Bin Laden had be killed. Usually support came with whichever side had "their guy" in charge.
Here's what's going to happen though, the left will blame Trump and W, the right will blame Obama and Biden and we will have learned nothing.
