Does anyone have it, and is it any good? Tex? Also looking for verdicts on Medieval 2: Total War! Thankies!
M2 TW is very good, especialy with the 'kingdoms' addon that adds a 'brittannia' 'crusades' 'tutonic' and 'americas' campaign. Theres so much to it, its hard to get bored of
AoE3 is excellent. A few changes from past games, as all the action takes place in America and it really focuses on the exploration/colonization aspect of the era. But it's great fun.
That would seem to be the natural progression of the series. Age of Mechanization? I wouldn't mind a European expansion for AoE3. 30 Years War, Wars of Succession, Peter the Great, etc. Napoleon would be right at the end of that era. I don't think that's the direction they would go, however.
I helped beta test that game, and not the big public one. I knew a guy at the time that actually was one of the designers and he got me into it. It was pretty fun, I helped solve some of the early bugs like walling around the settlement in multiplayer right at the beginning to defeat your enemies. They fixed that problem after a series of wins that only took 5 minutes.
Eh, get "Supreme Commander". It's expansion pack just came out today, and it's from Chris Taylor, the guy who did "Total Annihilation".
I liked AoE2 more myself. I loved playing the British and making huge armies of Longbowmen that murder anything that comes near.
I'm about to try Crusader Kings, by the guys that did Hearts of Iron and Europa Universalis. It's got some RPG elements to it, evidentally, including interacting with the nobles in your kingdom and dynastic politics. M:TW I liked, but I got damn frustrated by the rebellion aspect - the computer would pop out an army of 'rebels' that were better equipped than I could make with my entire kingdom! I could almost always beat them with my higher leadership scores and taking control of the battles, but it just didn't feel right at all. I'm struggling to equip men at arms and the computer pops out of nowhere with a hundred knights from one province? Sure.... Did M:TW2 ever fix that?
Yeah, longbowmen can just dissect wave after wave of infantry. One of the things I like about 3 are the increased artillery option. I just like being able to use guns. Plus it's closer to my favorite historical era of combat.
Tex got me hooked on Age of Kings. Jesus, I love that game. I'd attack with what I called "Divisions" which were the maximum of 40 individual units that you could control at one time. I'd attack with a division of mounted Knights, flanked by two divisions of long bowmen, and supported by two divisions of heavy artillery (trebuchet and onagers)
I can still beat every person on this board that plays Age of Kings or The Conquerors all at once, 7v1. You're all pussies.
I wouldn't really call AoK a good competition game. Don't get me wrong, I logged MANY hours on that game and I loved it. I just don't consider it to have any aspects that are sort of necessary for a good competitive multiplayer title.
