Funny thing is that (in my case at least) I'm a regular enough customer at that convenience store that half of the staff knows me by name. Us sketchy types tend not to be very mobile by ourselves-I rarely leave the neighbourhood other than for work or entertainment-and it'd be you (categorically) that we'd both be keeping a weather eye on.

It's really in my "group" interests to be a deterrent against crime, even if it means breaking the law (i.e.: physically blocking a shoplifter, suckering a would-be robber with a greeting card rack...) to do so. A few years back, my buddy was in line at the LCBO when the guy a person or two ahead of him pulled a knife on the cashier.
