    "Eagerly," not "anxiously."

Unless the thought of seeing Paris in prison fills you with dread, which I don't think is what you meant.

Alliteration is a frill. Accuracy is a core value.

Of course, you could have said "eagerly expecting," but then someone might think Paris got you pregnant.

I think you should fuck off and start your own thread. Maybe in that forum you run, the workshop.

Oh wait, you quit because some pansy trolled you and you couldn't hack it.

I think you just have to face the fact that this thread is serving as a wonderful way to clarify what Paladin has wisely noted is a very common word substitution, and in addition to whiling away your lonely Friday night :yeehaw: over Paris, you're doing some good in spite of yourself.

Waah waah. In the 18th century the word got a new meaning. And, if you are REALLY eager to see something, you often get a feeling that is similar to the anxiety associated with the other meaning of anxious. In my opinion it's a good word to use when you want to emphasize how eager you are.

Now, 300 years later, you jerks are STILL fighting it.

No, she makes me anxious about the upcoming generation of young ladies. And when I say anxious that way, I mean it in terms of dread.

She makes me a little uneasy, personally. Like, any second I expect her face to morph into reptilian alien from V.

Definitely, and I take the stance that language is constantly changing. And for me, if a new meaning for a word arose in the 18th century, it's been plenty long enough to stick. Of course, any word with more than one definition (especially seemingly contradictory definitions), needs to be used carefully when confusion could take place.

Actually, I'd be relieved if that happened.

Mainers use "cunnin", which is a mutation of "cunning", to mean cute.

Didn't know it was a regionalism until I got on the net, but there's a word acquiring a totally different meaning.

    Or hell, computer.

A computer used to be a person who did mass amounts of math.

Then came the mechanical computer, then the electrical computer, and that finally made the job obsolete, so the distinction of what kind was dropped, and now we just call them computers.

Another trend in some states is "caught" and "cot" developing the same pronunciation. I, as well as most people I know, pronounce them differently, but I do hear people saying them the same way now and then.

Good thing we don't have diction sticklers whining at us about not saying "meet" and "meat" differently. That merge is only a little (relatively) older than the new meaning of anxious.

Then there are regionalisms like "rout" instead of "root" for "route."

Now, there's one I'm not familiar with. What's the difference?

I've actually made an effort in recent years to pronounce "aunt" so that it rhymes with "jaunt," rather than "ant." I've also started saying "their" so that it rhymes with "here," to distinguish it from "there" which rhymes with "hair."

English spelling, grammar, and pronunciation all desperately need an enema.

Well, aunt/jaunt makes you sound either veddy WASP, or black. (Actually, though, it would be closer to "ont" as in "font.")

    Their/here, though...I don't get that...

    No, your bum does.

If people understand what you mean, then language has served it's purpose.

If you say "theer", to me, I'm gonna give you a :wtf: then bust out sniggering.

    Guilty as charged. :diacanu:

(not really, too much Celtic blood; but my dad was a New Englander)

I don't either. I don't know where it came from. I guess I just never liked that "there" and "their" are supposed to rhyme. Actually, I don't rhyme "their" with "here" but it's closer to "here" than to "there." :D
