And there it is. A politician looking for some cheap press ends up limiting the internet service of thousands. The ISPs will of course go along with the incredibly flimsy "child pornography" line because it gives them the perfect excuse to cut a service to their customers that's costing them money. Ironically enough Time Warner claims they're no longer offering newsgroups because of "low subscriber usage" when the real reason is most assuredly the exact opposite. The increasing attempts by the government and corporations to rope off and control the internet are worrisome. The libertarian spirit that made the internet one of the greatest success stories of the last 25 years is more and more threatened by the specter of censorship, taxes, and the end of net neutrality.
Well, hopefully this is another New York Attorney General who will lose his job in disgrace, ruin his family life, and with a little luck face criminal charges.
I'm surprised it is such a wide sweep, here some Usenet newsgroups are blocked by all providers under government regulations where it is extremely illegal content, but by and large Usenet is still fine and active.
It's the NEW American paradigm: if someone misuses their freedom, you have to sacrifice yours, too. I personally prefer the OLD paradigm...
Digital cameras can be used to take pornographic images of children, while avoiding detection with much greater ease than film cameras. Ban digital cameras!
This is going to piss off a LOT of people. If I were Cuomo, I'd be worried about a Photoshop of him in a compromising position, perhaps with a minor, ending up online.
