Not a single news site reporting this (yet?)...

EDIT: nevermind, just being posted on the news blogs now.

Best British PM since Churchill. :salute:

A singularly destructive person. Not going to say I'm glad she's dead, but I certainly won't mourn her.

I didn't like many of the things she did in the 80's but there is no doubt she should be honored.

I knew it would be only a matter of minutes before this tedious lefty bullishit appeared.

You weren't even ten fucking years old when she left office. :jayzus:

Please stop being a giant douchenozzle in a memorial thread. Make a troll Thatcher thread if you wish, but keep the crap out of this one.

Considering what was posted in a memorial thread about one of our own posters I think you can expect some negative comments in a thread about the death of such a polarising figure.

Saying keep comments like that out of here is like saying the same thing in Chavez's memorial thread

I know you were aiming that at Rick but I was actually 14 when she left office and growing up with a Scottish father (not to mention Scottish grandparents who visited frequently) who hated much of her industrial policies I can say that rants about her were a childhood fixture for me. ;)

We have a tradition long established at Wordforge of trolling dead politicians. I see nothing wrong with it.

My personal take is that her ideas were right for the era when she came to power, but she stayed in office too long. On balance, the UK is better for her service, but people should avoid slavish adherence to the idea that her policies are always the right choice. Here's one of my favorite Thatcher quotes:

So, destroying our industrial base, manufacturing and mining and leading the economy into true boom and bust were right for the time?

When I read some of the comments in this thread, I was very, very dissapointed. What is it that is so bad at WF that some can lose the capacity for compassion or that simple sense of humanity? WF is just words on a screen. It's bullshit psuedo-politics and hot air. It's not worth developing hatred over.

Not to mention leaving the entire edifice to be built on financial services - now tearing the world economy to bits. Thanks Maggie.

All of that had already been destroyed by virtue of the UK not being a third world country, and lacking comparative advantage in such industries. Thatcher simply recognized what had already happened and took steps to position the economy elsewhere. Blame Adam Smith if you wish, but don't pretend that boom and bust wasn't already a standard feature of the economy.

Right now we should have an economy like Germany's, based on hi-tech manufacturing. Instead we have one based on smoke, mirrors, magic and a house of cards thats easier to knock over than a partially felled tree... i.e. financial services.
She also started us down the road to becoming a fascist state, ok everyone who has come after her has just carried it on (the worst of which being Blair and Brown), but it was during her reign that we were substantially turned down this route.

Personally, I think some of her policies were good (privatization of companies), some of them were bad (shutting down the coal mines because she wanted to harm the unions), while others were good in theory but completely botched in execution (like how she killed the British auto industry instead of slowly privatizing it like the French did with their car companies). Still, she deserves to be honored.

The comments in this thread are very mild. It is quite appropriate to discuss someones political legacy once they've died and to give a negative appraisal of that.
