Watching S3 of Breaking Bad now and knowing now how it all eventually ends, the scenes with Saul just hit different.
It's really hard not to like Lalo, he's such a great character. So friendly,, always smiling. But underneath it, there's a cold calculating killer.
I’d gladly watch a Lalo prequel but not only does Tony Dalton look too old to play a Lalo Origin story, but Gilligan has said he’s done with the BB/BCS-verse.
That's good, because so far the 2022 Emmys are snubbing Better Call Saul. Julia Garner just won best supporting actress for Ozark. She was great in that series, but she was also up against Rhea Seehorn (Kim) who should have won. Keep this shit up, and the Emmy judges will be facing war crime charges.
I was splitting time between the Emmys and Monday Night Football as well as checking Twitter, but I don't think I've seen any of the shows that seem to be winning a lot of the awards (Succession, Squid Game, that show Zendaya is in). My wife watches Succession, but it doesn't interest me even a little bit. BTW, some fucker from Squid Game won instead of Bob Odenkirk.
Squid Game is absolute stupidity. It's a death match where last man standing wins. Guess what happens. The main character wins and everyone else he meets dies. The end. I'm told it's some sort of commentary...but OK.
Yeah, I saw the first episode. It's quirky and different, but not an award-worthy show by any means. I didn't watch any more episodes because I pretty much figured where the story was going. Oscar and Emmy voters tend to get goofy when it comes to foreign films/television. "Oh, it's foreign! It must be good!"

If you're into this kind of thing like I am, this is a pretty cool video with BCS cinematographer Marshall Adams. It's a lighting company page and sort of a testimonial for their products, but still cool IMHO.
Also, I never commented after I rewatched Breaking Bad immediately after the BCS finale. I have to say that I like Better Call Saul more than BB. Not by much, though. Not only is the story really good, but I also like the overall production value more. As Adams points out in the video I posted, the show runners challenged him to really push the creativity and that was evident from the very beginning of the series. Breaking Bad didn't start to have that really creative "look" until it was well underway and that's the tiebreaker for me.
I liken the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul debate to the Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back debate. In both cases, the follow-up production was superior in so many ways (cinematography, plotting, acting, direction, etc.) but the original will always be my favourite and hold a special place in my entertainment heart. You couldn't have BCS without BB, just as you couldn't have ESB without 1977's Star Wars (no ANH bullshit).
just finished the series and skimmed the last few pages here. Agree with everything. God damn what a show. When Lalo was shot and dying, his grin was absolutely fiendish. Like something out of The Exorcist. The basement scene (insulation, cots, and waterheater) with Jimmy and Walter. My take is that was hell. Thoughts? edit: google search. nope. I like my interpretation better.
For Fathers Day my daughters got me the BCS boxed set and I've been watching with commentaries on since last Monday.
I have a sinking feeling the Emmys are going to snub Better Call Saul yet again. Looks like they're jizzing their pants over Succession, which is a really good show but doesn't hold a candle to BCS.
I think you're right on both counts which sucks because BCS was fantastic throughout its entire run. My wife watched Succession, but I had zero interest in that show and from the bits and pieces of it I saw it doesn't hold a candle to Better Call Saul. I'm up to S3 on the commentaries, BTW, and they're great.
Apparently 7 nominations but as I say each year when the regional Emmy nominations are announced here, "Glitter ain't Gold." It's a fucking crime that the show has never even gotten a nomination for cinematography.
Vince Gilligan's new AppleTV+ show is apparently sci-fi set in...Albuquerque. Vince Gilligan Slams AI as a ‘Plagiarism Machine,’ Reflects on ‘Breaking Bad’ Finale and Teases New Rhea Seehorn Show: ‘No Crime, No Meth’
They set a record: most Emmy nominations (53) without a single win. Seeing how successful Breaking Bad was in that regard, it's ridiculous that BCS couldn't even get one for writing, editing, or any of the creative arts. My wife really got into Succession, but fuck that show as far as I'm concerned. It holds no interest for me whatsoever.
