Sam Altman's 'Worldcoin' Wants to Give You Crypto in Exchange for Eyeball Scans

If you thought cryptocurrency shenanigans ended with Dogecoin and NFTs, you should probably sit down for this one. Sam Altman, the former CEO of famed startup incubator Y Combinator, is reportedly working on a new cryptocurrency that’ll be distributed to everyone on Earth. Once you agree to scan your eyeballs.

Yes, you read correctly.

You can thank Bloomberg for inflicting this cursed news on the rest of us. In its report, Bloomberg says Altman’s forthcoming cryptocurrency and the company behind it, both dubbed Worldcoin, recently raised $25 million from investors. The company is purportedly backed by Andreessen Horowitz, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, and Day One Ventures.

“I’ve been very interested in things like universal basic income and what’s going to happen to global wealth redistribution and how we can do that better,” Altman told Bloomberg, explaining what fever dream inspired this.

Universal basic income is an economic theory that stipulates every citizen should have a government-provided income regardless of need. While you may associate UBI with the failed political ambitions of Andrew Yang, in the tech world it’s been touted as a strategy to offset job losses spurred by automation. Altman himself has been a vocal proponent of UBI for several years. During his time at Y Combinator, Altman planned to dole out as much as $60 million as part of a pilot study to test UBI’s feasibility. Altman also began speaking about the potential relationship between crypto and UBI as early as 2019.

What supposedly makes Worldcoin different is it adds a hardware component to cryptocurrency in a bid to “ensur[e] both humanness and uniqueness of everybody signing up, while maintaining their privacy and the overall transparency of a permissionless blockchain.” Specifically, Bloomberg says the gadget is a portable “silver-colored spherical gizmo the size of a basketball” that’s used to scan people’s irises. It’s undergoing testing in some cities, and since Worldcoin is not yet ready for distribution, the company is giving volunteers other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin in exchange for participating. There are supposedly fewer than 20 prototypes of this eyeball scanning orb, and currently, each reportedly costs $5,000 to make.

Supposedly the whole iris scanning thing is “essential” as it would generate a “unique numerical code” for each person, thereby discouraging scammers from signing up multiple times. As for the whole privacy problem, Worldcoin says the scanned image is deleted afterward and the company purportedly plans to be “as transparent as possible.”

Listen, there’s nothing inherently wrong with UBI, or even the need to ensure people don’t abuse a good thing. But, does it have to be done like this? Do we always have to jump to the most cursed solutions first?

Salesforce Park's much-hyped Sho Restaurant is dead

Sho Restaurant, the extravagant, NFT-driven fine-dining pipe dream atop San Francisco’s Salesforce Park, is dead, both the Transbay Joint Powers Authority and Sho Group CEO Joshua Sigel have confirmed to SFGATE.

“We have reached the difficult conclusion that bringing SHO to life atop Salesforce Park is not possible at this time,” Sigel wrote in an emailed statement. “Despite a strong demand for the concept with millions of dollars in both pre-sold and reserved memberships (despite multiple requests for refunds due to job uncertainty or loss), we ultimately could not address the many concerns brought about by potential investors, most of which have been around the future of SF and the rising costs of constructing the restaurant.”

Sigel originally pitched the restaurant as “one of the more expensive restaurants built west of the Mississippi,” promising a luxury Japanese fine-dining experience to the general public and Sho Club members who purchased non-fungible tokens, or digital tokens stored on the blockchain, priced between $7,500 and $300,000.

In email correspondence with SFGATE, Sigel wrote that the full cost of memberships, including associated fees, had been reimbursed. He did not address follow-up questions regarding how many memberships were sold.

Sigel blamed "macro level" factors including “labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, geopolitical uncertainty, and inflation” for an increase in construction costs, leading to the group’s inability to continue with the project.

The Transbay Joint Powers Authority, which oversees management of Salesforce Park, allowed Sho Group to terminate its lease agreement in July, less than a year after Sho Restaurant’s “groundbreaking” event. In the time since, the building has remained empty. In fact, the project was never issued permits to build, because designers failed to follow up on feedback from the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection, as SFGATE reported in March.

“The TJPA has agreed to part ways with Sho Group and are turning our attention to engaging the community and our real estate professionals to identify the highest and best use of these three spaces,” a Transbay Authority spokesperson wrote to SFGATE on Wednesday night, referencing both Sho Restaurant as well as the Sho Market spaces that were proposed to be built on the ground floor of Salesforce Park. Those, too, have been canceled.

Shotaro Kamio, the Berkeley-based chef for whom the venture is named, did not immediately respond to SFGATE requests for comment on Thursday. The Transbay Joint Powers Authority, meanwhile, did not immediately respond to a request from SFGATE for further information, including why they believe the venture failed.

Last August, Sigel told journalists gathered atop Salesforce Park that Sho Restaurant was slated to open in fall of 2023, and would serve as the flagship location for the members-only Sho Club, which would eventually expand to other cities. The restaurant would offer limited seating for non-members who could could afford the steep prices on menu items “inspired by what you would call the commoner, who was using a flame to actually keep their home warm,” Sigel said.

At the same event, Sigel touted Sho Group’s commitment to NFT-based memberships, which he argued would help offset construction costs — though he also said Sho Group had strong interest from accredited investors as a “Plan B.” There were supposed to be 3,275 Sho Club NFT memberships, according to the group’s website: 2,878 slots for the $7,500 “Earth” membership tier, 377 slots for the $15,000 “Water” membership tier, and 20 slots for the $300,000 “Fire” membership tier. The memberships would bestow special privileges and perks, and could be resold on OpenSea, an NFT marketplace.

The NFT memberships were initially supposed to go on sale in the fall of 2022.

“Over the past few months, we have received an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm and interest,” Sigel wrote to prospective members in an October 2022 email SFGATE obtained via a public records request. “… We will begin selling memberships to the public in late October / early November.”

That did not happen. In early 2023, Sigel claimed to prospective investors that he had decided to sell about 100 NFT memberships as part of a pre-sale. There have been no social media posts from any of Sho Group’s accounts since late September of last year.

Sho Club’s most recent social media post reads: “In one sentence, SHO is an experiential hospitality platform building dynamic communities through the creation of one-of-a-kind guest experiences.” The post also includes the handshake emoji, linking the words “hospitality” with “Blockchain & Web3.”
