Being a turn-based game, it'd be difficult coordinating a joint strike precisely. Even if you could time the click on "Attack", say my internet connection is a few milliseconds slower than Darkening's = he runs into a full set of defences and dies, I engage what's left over - rather than our combined strength being enough to overcome the defences so we both survive. Given that, there's no way you'd get two players to cooperate if only one is going to survive to walk off with the cash, even if the second player could use an escape pod.
That's one of the reasons I want to get into Eve, it allows lots of smaller ships to combine against bigger ones. The favourite Goonfleet tactic is to attack large ships which can be worth hundreds, or occasionally thousands of dollars in real world currency with hundreds of small ships.
https://secure.eve-online.com/ft/?aid=101514 (for a 14 day trial) I still haven't tried it yet, waiting for when I have some free time to get into it, but from people I know who do play it is apparently a blast.
Today, for the SECOND TIME a federation member didn't realize I was in their alliance and took whole systems from me. What hurt most was that my counterattack inexplicably failed.
Not only did he appologize, he gave me a ridiculous amount of cash to make up for the splattering I got while trying to retake my world.
Paladin must have a buttload of credits stashed away somewhere, to come back so quickly after losing his ship 4 TIMES while trying to take my planets away. I don't know whether to laugh or cry, as he was ultimately successful.
It's more possible that he in fact just has good shields, and was escaping your planet intact each time. What did you lose?
I've lost my ship EXACTLY ONCE in the game though admittedly that was against your crack gunners. And, yes, I got me a pretty fat bankroll going.
So it looks like 100 million mine deflectors isn't enough. Sure glad I spent all those credits upgrading my ship before it happened. Count me ready to start over.
If I blew a ton of turns and current cash on planet building, I could probably be in a good situation by the time the Armageddon occurs. As it is, I invested most of the cash Elwood gave me in upgrades and the interest on the rest has allowed me to set up several new systems that mean I'm turning a fair profit just on interest. I've probably spent a lot more on sector defence than I should have - they're nothing to be sneezed at from my own current tech level, but they won't stop players like Doomsday or Elwood. That's why the reset interests me - I think I know the rules well enough now to stay on a relatively equal footing with the others, though it'll be interesting to see how the new alliances turn out. Might try out the possibility of a bona fide neutral party... I'd act as a go-between for opposing alliances, performing pickups and drops for a take of the profit. Then, anyone who likes trying to lure opponents into ambushes with promises of credits left on "undefended" planets would find their strategy useless since their intended target won't be showing up.
Yes, or you, but then you already know my defences won't stop you, having stumbled across at least three of my sectors. Despite saying "ouch!" the last time the mines hit you, you big girl.
I gotta admit, as much as I bag on Chewie here, he's been a good sport about having one of my worlds in his system. Of course it could just be that Wookies like their vente haf-caf soy mocha lattes.

HOW MANY F**KING MINES?! Sector 142. 207091145 mines. That's how many hit me, anyway. Mine deflectors took about half of that. Ah well. The Nemesis was a nice ship. Her namesake is going to be a bit less roomy though...
Those were meant for bailey. I put them there hoping he'd come back after scanning my planets in there half a dozen times. But you'll do.
Given that bailey tried and failed twice to scan my ship when we kept bumping into each other at 3001, I guess the only reason he scanned your worlds that many times is because he kept getting partial info. There are fewer mines left in Elwood's "prize" system, FFS.
Aye, I haven't bothered really upgrading my sensors. As for those mines Ramen, put in ten times more and you might have a chance of destroying me.
