With the help of a friend, I've been trying to build myself a new PC. We've already had to return one motherboard for a replacement. Yesterday we installed the second one. When we switch it on, an "XFX Play Hard" splash screen appears...and then nothing. It just stays on the splash screen, doesn't even get to count the RAM or anything. Pressing F1, Delete, or anything else doesn't work.

Anyone got any clue as to what this could be?

That splash screen sounds like a gfx card splash, so its not getting as far as POST.
Sounds like a mobo, ram or cpu prob. Try taking out and re-seating everything

Yeah, I've been doing some browsing on the XFX boards and they said that taking out and reseating the RAM might do the trick. They also said that I might need to reset the CMOS. How do I do that? And what does "POST" mean?

post is 'power on self test' its the cpu, hd and ram test that a pc does on bootup. Resetting the CMOS is usulay done by taking the BIOS battery out, changing a jumper stting, putting the battery back in and then resetting the jumper... check your motherboard manual

Cheers. I've actually made some progress by taking 1GB of RAM out. It works with 1GB in, but as soon as I put the second stick in, it reverts to how it was behaving before...

Also try the RAM in seperate slots to make sure one of the slots isn't farked. Have a link to the RAM you bought?

Dunno where the RAM came from myself. But it does seem like one stick is dodgy, as it will only work with the other one. I'll get it replaced.

Hopefully I'll be able to install the OS without any further problems.

They might not be a matched pair. Try putting them in slots 1 and 3 instead of 1 and 2.

Tried that, and all sorts of other things. One of them definitely doesn't work.

You should bbe fine on one until you get the pther sorted.
Remember.. when you take the RAM back take both not just one, you need to swap a matched pair for a matched pair

Grrr. I finally have that problem sorted out.

Now it POST's, but the power fails after about 2 minutes. Just turns itself off. And there's no real pattern in terms of what it's doing at that time. If I let it sit or proceed with installing the OS, it does the same thing.

EDIT: Please ignore. Fixed it. The heatsink wasn't properly connected to the CPU.
