I think it isn't the aquisition of money so much as the attitude that I have money, therefore I am happy. I have more money than you, therefore I am better than you. I like the Johnny Cash song Satisfied Mind:

I don't want to be on my deathbed and say, "I sure wish I had made more money. That would have made me a better person."

Money isn't what motivates me and certainly wouldn't do anything to make me either happier or more miserable but it would go a long way to making me more comfortable. You could see all the beautiful sights and sample all the exquisite tastes but without your family or someone special to enjoy them with it would seem empty.

Socioeconomic elites promote the idea that money is the root of all evil to anesthesize the masses to their financialy inferior status. "We don't want anyone taking away *our* money, so we'll convince john q. public that desiring money is actually morally bad."
