Refusing to wear a mask isn't a political view, despite what the Republicans tell you.

It’s something I thought was stupid and it’s related to the cancel culture debate so I posted it. I don’t know why that’s so hard to understand. I’m not mad, I’m not outraged, I just thought it was stupid on Disney’s part.

So you make that statement and move on, not keep harping on it as if it's the most important part of your day.

I made my statement and I did move on. I haven’t been harping on it at all.

CPAC just cancelled a speaker for anti-Semitic remarks. He sounds like a real winner, but I thought cancel culture was for the libs? :chris:

All right, you're not mad, you just think it's stupid.

Can you articulate why you think it's stupid?

If a show features ethnic stereotypes, some parents may not want to watch it with their kids until their kids are old enough to have a conversation about those things.

When we were kids, my dad read the Little House on the Prairie books out loud to us. He left some of the problematic stuff in -- for instance, Ma's "the only good Indian is a dead Indian" moments stayed, because they were always followed by Pa admonishing her, and because Laura always sided with Pa, the narrative was structured in such a way as to make the reader do the same. But when something problematic went unchallenged by the story, he would always do a quick on-the-fly substitution, because he knew we were at an age where we didn't need to hear about the heroes of a story we loved doing something inappropriate, but he also didn't want us to end up thinking that "darkies" was an acceptable thing to call people.

Lots of parents want to be able to make that sort of choice. That's why we have movie ratings; that's why we have TV ratings that describe whether the show got the rating for language, sex, violence, etc.

I've never heard you say that movie and TV ratings are stupid, but maybe we've never had a thread about that, so I'll just ask: Are they?

And after all the times that liberals have used a B.S Nazi analogy in the past, I thought that they didn't care about Jewish feelings at this point.

All snarking aside, Disney can certainly fire whomever they want, but don't turn around and tell me that cancel culture doesn't exist because that is a clear case of its existence.

You do know that the MPAA ratings are arbitrary nonsense, right? Pretty much everyone in Hollywood knows this. But don't take my word for it.

    But wait, there's more.
    https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2018/03/movie-ratings-mpaa-donald-trump

Here's a good argument for why we should ditch the ratings.
    https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordeba...in-movies/get-rid-of-movie-ratings-altogether

And the music ratings? That was just Tipper Gore getting her panties in a wad because black people were getting uppity and of course liberals always think they know what's best for everyone.

    Here's a little tip.
If you're furiously stabbing someone, but you keep your face blank like Terminator, and keep saying in a monotone deadpan "I'm not angry :borg:" not only are you a liar, but you're not a very clever liar.
I know you anti-SJW guys think being passive aggressive is a really cool trick, and that you invented it, but it's not, and you didn't.
You're naked guys that think they're invisible.
    We see your ass.

It's completely true that MPAA ratings treat sexual content as worse than violence. That's one reason it's good that the TV system is more nuanced.

But do you think the idea of letting people know what type of content is in the show they're about to watch is universally stupid?

I forget the wording (which was much more succinct) but it is something along the lines of:

We have socialized men to believe that they shouldn’t have emotions so instead of learning how to process them they have learned how to rationalize them.

I think what's termed "cancel culture" is really, more often than not, historically disenfranchised and voiceless people finally being listened to. That's obviously going to bother conservatives, who by definition like things to remain the same.

    That, and "identity politics".
"Identity politics" is oppressed groups speaking at all.
    "Cancel culture" is them winning.

or maybe (hear me out) some conservatives just think that the disenfranchised deserve their voices to be heard, but shutting everyone else down in the process is a counter-productive and alienating way to go about it. Just a theory!

Agree it's not a true "cancel" but IMHO if anybody honestly thinks that The Muppet Show needs a warning they should seek mental health counseling.

Imagine devoting that much time and energy into decrying "wokeness"

I mean, I know why the grifters do it - because their are millions of marks who are as slow on the uptake as FF is - but the lowly keyboard warrior?

Why the actual fuck do they CARE?

The sum total of "being woke" is being able to view human existence in our society through a lens other than white straight cis maleness. It's the concept that those other views, those other frames, those other lived experiences, have value too.

and since a certain large percentage of those white straight cis males view every human interaction as a transaction that can only be gain for one if someone else loses (Trump-brain personified, actually) the idea that I might be "woke" to the lived experiences of a black woman (for instance) or a non-binary person doesn't cause their piece of the pie to get smaller is not a calculation they can process.

Such a claustrophobic way of living life.

    See above.

I mean here we have a culture which is TRYING to stumble it's way to a place where we can be a little kind - just kindness! - towards people who might not see things as we do and you lot can't avoid getting terminally offended about it.

The choice to be slightly more kind to others is the supreme sin for conservatives....which, TBH, explains a lot.

If you'd read past the headline your comment here would be unnecessary.

Cliffs notes: "Cancel Culture" as right wing grifters and liars use it doesn't exist in the way that they try to make their marks think it does.

That which they bitch about using that term is a natural, normal, ever-present feature of any and all cultures and doesn't flow in any set political direction but is used by those with all sorts of views to resist those who advance views they find anethema.

for example, Anita Bryant tried to "cancel" Gay rights.
Joe McCarthy tried to "cancel" communists (who mostly didn't exist)
Phyllis Sclafely tried to cancel the ERA
AFA got it's start with a preacher who tried, or professed to try, to cancel indecency on television.
The whole of the 80's were chock full of people trying to cancel rock music because somehow satanism.
FRA, AFA, ADF, and their multitude of allies try to cancel trans people out of public life every god damned day for the last decade.

the list literally goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on....

And yet mother fuckers like Josh Hawley would never consider to call ANY of that "cancel culture" or "political correctness" or what ever other bullshit propaganda term they imagined in the current hour....
because the right CAN'T be an agent of cancel culture, it fucks up their narrative.

So either the myth of "cancel culture" as they describe it doesn't exist, or the thing they are bitching about is simply ordinary human interaction and not some grave new threat that we need to be in an uproar about.

So AS THE TERM IS BEING USED BY CRITICS it doesn't exist. And that which they describe is not an issue.
