According to anybody who's ever heard music, you sniveling appeasenik fuck. Talking fast over recordings of other peoples' work is not music.
If you don't like rap, you are old, and your opinion doesn't matter. That said, 99.5% of rap is bad. Like Tamar said, there are a few songs from Run-DMC, Will Smith and other that are passable and some from Blackstreet, Bel Biv Devoe, Naughty By Nature, etc. that I consider actually good, but the majority of it is utter utter garbage.
The entire genre is crap? Damn. I can't think of any genre that I would disregard as a whole. Even country has a few gems, IMO.
That people will buy any stupid shit if it's marketed right. Sales =/= artistic/musical/aesthetic value or integrity.
Here's an idea, and I'm just blue-skying here: If a track doesn't include sounds produced by a musical instrument (as opposed to sounds coming out of a computer) there's no actual music being played, therefore the "artist" producing it isn't an actual musician, therefore it's not actually music. Pink Floyd? Music. Def Leppard? Music. Metallica? Music. The kid who played Pachelbel's Canon on an electric guitar? Produced music. "Li'l 4 Whoopty" bruising his 30 pound lower lip by flapping it against his chin talking at 5x normal speed over a recording of Yakety Sax? Not music.
Never said it did. Just enjoying the White Guyz Spitting Venom. Hey, maybe that could be the name of your next band!
Haven't really gotten into it yet. Though I like the couple James Blake songs I've heard. Thoughts on a good starting place?
Well you can probably start by banging some pots and pans together, it will sound better because dubstep is awful. But it is still music, as is rap.
