I have never felt particularly obligated to rescue people from their own stupidity or to mourn when Darwin claims another victory.

The folks I'll say "deserve" it are those who, by their active affirmative knowing choice (particularly when politically motivated) create conditions which make it more likely that innocent bystanders become infected.

I have an IRL friend - you've seen her comment on some of my Facebook posts.
She was a nurse for years, lost her license when she ratted out a nursing home she was working for on some bullshit or other.
Deeply caring empathetic person all her life

Has also developed some pretty deep mental and emotional disorders over the last decade or so. Not the sort that makes you unable to function but, for lack of a better word, robbed her of discernment.
When she go online full time she began to basically deteriorate before my eyes - literally like watching some elderly loved one slid into dementia.
Now she's a rabid anti-vaxxer who buys all this shit about Bill Gates poisoning kids and wanting to chip us with mandatory vaccines - and Joe Biden is a sexual creepy predator but she's never seen any evidence that Trump does anything inappropriate.
It's maddening.
And fills me with a white-hot hatred for those evil motherfuckers who deliberately poison minds for clicks on YouTube.

My grandmother on my mother's side was a very loving person. I once joked with a girlfriend of mine who was coming over to dinner that she would feel sympathy for the unabomber because she was very loving. It was at that dinner that he came up and she said people probably did not understand him and it made him that way. She came from Nazi Germany and saw the destruction of war and the problems of prejudice. She faced them when she came over here. She did not have a thing against black people as far as I ever knew, and she certainly treated my good friend from high school the same as any other friend at the table when he came over.

At the end of her life she was subject to daily watching of faux news. This was when dementia hit her. She just could not walk up the stairs to the other TV anymore to watch things like little house on the prarie or the golder girls, which she would have rather watched than the news. She was in fear that Obama was actually trying to kill her and the dems were going to take her life away in death panels when that whole argument was happening. She was terrified of those things. She was terrified of the doctors who were fighting her blood cancer because all she could remember was the daily repetition of propaganda and not what they told her.

That was my problem with faux news was they scared the shit out of her. This is the same woman who wandered around NYC alleys to find homeless people to give sandwiches to when we went to visit the city. She would actually make extra just to give to people. She would go down the alleys to put it near them so it would not get thrown away because she did not want them to have to rummage through the trash, or have someone else grab up the carefully wrapped food. Part of my resentment and my anger at my grandfather was that I knew he subjected her to that crap.

In the end he did not know that she may have been scared, but she did not become hateful. There was some surprise she would have when black people were happy and nice. The Island black women down here are super cheereful and awesome. She was afraid the world around was like faux news said it was, but really it is just people. My grandfather was the bigot. She was just scared because of stories, and that faded quickly when she was out with me because that what was in her heart. My grandfather is just broken now. He cannot even remember the propaganda, but that leaves him scared. The black people who serve him make him nervous, but he knows he needs them.

There are some people who are caught up in the lies because they are trapped into the bubble, and there are others who long for that bubble because it reinforces their bigotry. I cannot make my grandfather a non-racist person, and he could not solidify the hate in my grandmother. He had a lifetime to do it, and the closest he got was when she could not leave him in his chair and go watch something else.

I doubt we'll hear from @Tuttle or @Marso until after the election.

The word from Dinner and Volpone over in the FB group is that the reason they don't post in the Red Room anymore is because its a lefty echo chamber, and not at all because the current situations are so fucked that many of their positions are nigh indefensible when you bring in things like evidence and not being a complete sociopathic cock womble.

I used to associate with a local relationship anarchy group. Anyone who doesn't 100% agree with what they think, and how things should be done isn't just wrong in their eyes, they're stupid, evil, and a lot of other things that end with "-ist" and "-phobic." I'm pretty sure they're a cult and I'm glad they kicked me out.

How I got kicked out: I was drunk at a party they hosted. Just normal drunk, which kills my anxiety and I'm more outgoing than I usually am. I was accused of being aggressive and dominating conversations, and they were pretty much treating me like I sexually assaulted someone at this party.

How a friend of mine got kicked out: This friend identifies as agender. They were kicked out not because they expressed opinions the group didn't like, but because they associated with people within the group who expressed opinions the leadership didn't like. The people who actually expressed said opinions were allowed to remain in the group because the leaders thought they could be educated. My friend, however, was ejected from the group because "you were assigned male at birth and we don't feel we owe you an accountability process."

Conservatives here, they're disagreed with, often harshly, but that's it. Those who were banned did far more than simply express opinions that people disagreed with, were told several times that their behavior wasn't cool, and why it wasn't cool, and were given a number of chances to change their behavior far beyond what would have been reasonable. If being disagreed with and argued with constitutes an echo chamber... isn't it liberals who are supposed to be the snowflakes?
