I heard about that earlier today. I actually received a text about it while I was in the pulpit preaching this morning. A Pastor friend of mine in Georgia, an hour ahead of me, was already home after their service, saw it, and immediately sent it to me.

Edit: The local TV station's article said the shooter walked in during the Communion portion of the liturgy, walked up to a server, and opened fire with a shotgun at arm's length. That's when one of the parishioners cleared leather and returned fire.

There's video of the incident because the church livestreams its services.

Apparently the guy who put down the bad guy is a retired police officer. Three shots total: two by the bad guy, one by the retired cop.

And the town was apparently given its name by Native tribes in the 1800s, when it was the only "white settlement" in the area.

I am glad someone with a gun shot the guy who came into the church.

However, in places with strict gun control laws you have much less of these incidents, and that means you do not have gunfire in a crowd of people which is going to lead to more deaths than having many less incidents. From what I see this is essentially the ideal situation in a society with guns everywhere. The good guy reacts quickly and takes out the attacker without a lot of other casualties or crossfire. When you take into account the crazy dude with the gun is so much rarer in places like the UK and these events occur so much less we see that the less present and more secured guns are the less we have to have a shoot out in a crowd.

Hang about . . . I thought a "good guy with a gun" could never stop a bad guy with a gun? That it was just a Rightforge fantasy? Now I'm questioning my entire worldview. :flow:

It's fantasy. The bad guy is only a bad guy because of right wing policies. Eliminate the right wing and the killing would stop. Get it?

Yes, but then he would have jizzed his muck all over it and we would have had to hit him with the newspaper again. It is good that we put him down. He wasn't a good dog.

That was never the argument. The argument was the good guy with the gun very rarely is effective at stopping a bad guy with a gun. It is a bad thing to rely upon. Given the nature of guns tends to dramatically increase the death toll as more are added to the mix the rare case of good guy with a gun saves the day never counters the bad guy with a gun makes carnage curve. The one thing that does bring down the bad guy with a gun causing carnage curve is to make guns very hard to get. While that curve goes down with dropping numbers of guns in society so does dumbass accidents with a gun and suicide rates.

Since I am going to respect the gun owners around here as mostly not guntards, my thought is that strict licensing and safety enforcement of gun owners would lower the number of deaths and accidents overall to a much more benign level, rather than an all out ban. I would like to see america try to make gun ownership an honorable position in society that one should strive for. It should be for craftsman who respect the danger and problems gun ownership creates. As a land of freedom people who want to can take upon themselves the responsibility and danger of owning and using a firearm safely.

I'm glad lives were saved. This:
Makes me believe he was mentally ill. Of course, I think if you walk into a church with intent to kill people, there is already something wrong in your head, but also because of his "transient" status, it's possible or likely that he suffered from any number of mental ailments that went untreated.

    Three lives lost needlessly. :(

I could probably donate a few squirts of piss to consecrate the murderer's grave.

Not me, but we should probably look into getting this dog for the funeral.

I'm somewhat WTF at the ready that he used a shotgun. You'd think that would cause some concern. Who brings a shotgun to church?

His ex wife did say that he had issues.

The security guard was a retired FBI agent.

So he may have just had a bit more training than your average redneck Texan trailer-dweller.
