You're surprised because you're an idiot. Has anyone suggested digging up the dead? Well, unless it was a slaves' graveyard, in which case the City of NY (and probably not the only city to do so) built over it in the 19th century, then when the original building was razed in the 20th century, the dead were exhumed, identified where possible, and reburied elsewhere, but I digress...
*hides shovel* I might have suggested the possibility of reanimating necrotic tissue, but that isn't actionable!
The Germans still have cemeteries where their World War II soldiers are interred, don't they? Same thing.
maybe the same thing, but not getting what you are saying: do Germans (in Germany) have cemeteries where enemy soldiers are buried? In other words Germany is no longer under Nazi rule, but their own WWII soldiers fought under Nazi rule. WWII had no mix of German Nazi soldiers and Germany non-Nazi soldiers fighting for what is now modern Germany. Every German who fought in WWII did it under the Nazi Germany flag. If you say Germany has cemeteries where non-German WWII soldiers who were enemies of what was Nazi Germany at the time (such as Americans or British) are buried and this cemetery is devoted strictly to these non-Germans then it would be the same. Fort Gordon has on it's Federal property a cemetery devoted entirely to buried Confederate soldiers who were enemies of the victorious Republic of which Fort Gordon is part of.
I don't know if there are Allied soldiers buried in Germany or not, but there are definitely German soldiers buried at Normandy and in many other countries. Those countries are hosting the graves of soldiers from an enemy power, knowing that although their cause was evil, most soldiers had little choice about fighting. So the French will keep cemeteries for their enemy's war dead, but you're sure not gonna see them naming their military bases after Goebbels and Himmler.
Fair enough! So why then did the US military name bases (like Fort Gordon for example) after Confederate leaders to begin with? Theory is they did this because they named bases after great, heroic American leaders regardless of which side they were on during the long history of our nation. They probably didn't figure their choices of names would ever be questioned by civilians.
Funny you should ask! In many cases, it was an effort to appease racists in local communities who were angry about an integrated base being located near them. https://www.vox.com/2020/6/9/21285097/army-base-name-change-confederacy-marines-navy
Budapest's big cemetary has a large section where Russian soldiers are buried, and Hungarians basically hate Russians.
Okay, y'all remember this statue? The guy who owns it recently died and left $5 million in his will to care for his border collie. No word on what will happen with the statue.
Confederate Military Base Names Just Met Their Gettysburg A Black admiral, a gruff Marine, a never-Trumper, and the maker of a viral video slamming Confederate sympathizers? Say goodbye to “Fort Bragg” and the rest.
Not only was the guy a liar but if one organization his will says is to be offered to gets it, they've said they'll tear it down.
Yeah, that's a big win. More here: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-new...statues-virginia-supreme-court-rules-n1262750
When I shared this on FB and said that I'd happily pay $100 to use it as a toilet after a night of binge drinking and Taco Hell, a friend of mine responded with this
fuckin tweets. “The rulers of this country have always considered their property more important than our lives.” more
for those keeping count that's 95 fucks not given concerning the whole monument removal issue. I just don't see what it accomplishes. What is the tangible result (whether negative or positive) of removing the monuments? I'd be interested in seeing the data, possibly resulting in my giving a fuck or three about it.
Why Confederate Lies Live On For some Americans, history isn’t the story of what actually happened; it’s the story they want to believe.
"Confederate Memorial Day"? Do the people in the South celebrate when their sports teams come in second place too?
Not only that, but they also give out trophies to the kids whose sports teams lost. Everyone gets a trophy.
