A-HA! UNLESS......the intruder rearranged her furniture! :chris: Sometimes burglars "make themselves at home" and take showers and eat meals when and if they have the luxury of time on their hands. Just putting that out there.

I’d read that text message and didn’t think it was necessarily racist and just in extremely poor taste... but the next one got me more concerned:

Even a two year sentence will guarentee she never works in law enforcement again.

That said, it wasn't a premeditated murder, so 5 to 10 years is appropriate IMO.

The ten years she was sentenced to seems pretty just and reasonable. I understand fully if the family of the victim doesn't think it was long enough though.

I have an acquaintance/friend who used to be the phone screener for a local radio show, and the dumb shit he'd do often became a subject of conversation on said radio show. Coming home after a night of drinking and entering or trying to enter the wrong apartment was something he did more often than is reasonable. One time, he set his keys down, realized he was in the wrong apartment, and then left, locking the door behind him, without his keys. He then called the maintenance guy and told him he's drunk and lost his keys, and asked him to open his apartment for him (wasn't the first time.)

The next morning, he remembered he left his keys in another apartment, but he didn't remember which apartment he entered. So, he had to go door-to-door explaning the situation and asking if people had his keys. He found them after like ten tries.

One of the radio show hosts was like "You realize if you keep doing this, you're going to get shot, right?" and he said "Yeah, probably." I haven't heard from him in several years; hopefully that didn't happen.

The brother of the victim and ex cop hugged after he made a statement

I dare you to watch the whole thing, won’t be a dry eye on Wordforge

It’s refreshing in a way because there’s none of the usual black vs white, cops vs civilians American bullshit that you see far too often. These are just people who have gone through trauma and are trying to get by it as best they can

Unfortunately she has to do significant time. But forgiveness and compassion are incredibly powerful. It sounds like there was a real attempt by everyone involved...the jury, the victim's family and the judge to serve justice instead of seeking revenge.

I think that's a given even if they gave her probation.
She's obviously gotta do some time. I think 5 years would be pretty fair.

Late breaking: she got 10 years.

Oh my god... I’m an atheist and that video moved me. What gets me is if the roles were reversed... and Botham had entered her apartment and killed her by accident, he’d be facing the death penalty in Texas... if he had made it to central booking alive... and he’d very likely get it with no sympathy from anyone.

Another thing... growing up in the streets like I did, you can kind of size a person up sometimes just by looking at them. It’s not a matter of what they are wearing or if they have tattoos or not... you can kind of tell on sight most of the time if someone is cool to approach or not to be fucked with. Botham Jean was a citizen. It doesn’t have much to do with the suits he wore, his career or that he was a church man... there’s something in his smile. He was a good one. It’s a shame that the cops that police the neighborhood can’t develop that same sense of people with regard to race, clothing or whatever other superficial traits that divide us.

I definitely saw a few comments from other blacks folks who eere none too happy about that young man doing what he did and fearing the wrong people would take away the wrong message from his statement. I can't say I blame them for being tired of always having to be better than our oppressors, but I also think he'd have had a different outlook on this if the verdict had gone the way we all expected this to go.

Either way, his family deserves to make peace in whatever way they see fit or are called upon by any higher power, public opinion and modeling for The Community(tm) be damned.

Botham's brother displayed an amazing act of humanity, love, and forgiveness. The way he pleaded with the judge, by saying please, and the emotion you could hear in his voice was genuine, he truly forgives Guyger for taking his brother's life and you can tell by the emotion you can hear when he says he's serious, he's an amazing person. And no one has the right to judge him in a negative light or to say he shouldn't have done that. What he feels and what he said is between himself, his brother, and Guyger. If you don't agree with what he did and said, shut the fuck up, move on, and get it over with. I only have sincere respect and admiration for this guy, and if he truly wishes the best for Guyger, then I do too.

He knows that more than one life was affected by what happened, and he wants the lives that remain to move on and have the best possible lives that they can, because he knows that's what his brother would have wanted.

10 years is serious time, but I hope she'll have a chance to rebuild her life and do something productive with it. Botham's brother deserves to have a wonderful life and I hope he does.

Mind you, I do agree on the face of this, but I also can't pretend that I don't sympathise with those who are agree that the media will likely will do to this what history's done to MLK and water it all the way down to be yet another fairy tale about black passivity overcoming all. @AlphaMan and @Lt. Mewa know what I'm getting at.

It's truly a Black Thing(tm). One I wish that weren't and one I've been victim to growing up, always being pressured into being the model minority for acceptance that's clearly never coming of America went and elected a white nationalist after the black guy.

But I, sadly, understand why people are lashing back against kindness and why people are saying 10 years isn't enough. I grew up with fairly decent white folks where I was in my teens before the only time anyone called me the N word off of Wordforge.* I had white relatives. It's been easier for me to step back in these cases and why it took me till 2015 to even begin to question out institution.

*The fact that every black person, up to and including the former leader of the Free world, has a story about being called the N-word is proof that racist is still very much alive.

I stand by what I said earlier.

    He deserves peace.

I wish more people would see it from that perspective and not filtering his actions through white gaze but it's a hair trigger reaction that takes time to unlearn.

I know a woman who was convicted of murder here in florida at 13 because she was in the closet crying with her friend as the guys they were with killed the guy. After serving her time she came out, got employed, has a family, and does pretty amazing. So much so the gys own daughter changed her opinion when she heard about the life she began after her prison sentence and even testified at her hearing to have her rights re-established. She won't spend ten year in prison, and it wont be the end of her life if she keeps her head. The reality is she is white and female so she will have the best chance to overcome a violent felony in people's minds.

Sadly, I think you're right. It won't be long before somebody tries to use Brandt Jean's forgiveness as a cudgel against a black person who they want to silence.

I saw the video of Mr. Jean's portion of the sentencing hearing. A remarkable act, similar to words of the people of Emmanuel AME in Charleston, and a clear presentation of the gospel in both word and deed. Were I in the same position, I can only hope I would act accordingly.

indeed! Also quite a few years back some loon burned down an Amish school (or some Amish gathering place) and killed a shitload of kids. Not a harsh word from the Amish community over that, and obviously it wasn't even close to being considered an accident by any means.

I agree that his act of forgiveness is remarkable... but he himself had to acknowledge that he only spoke for himself... and was quick to point out that people in his own family disagree with him. While I found his display very touching and emotional, I'm not in a position to say that I forgive Guyger for her mistake... She did not directly harm me. If she did, I don't think I could or would even want to.
