I'm having a lot of problems with this board. A third of the icons in the make-a-post page don't load, my quoted posts have a lot of coding in the text box, I can't see avatars half the time, hitting the Enter key while making a post wipes out half my post, thread loads are slow, half the threads are taking me to a new page to give rep to someone, and half the thread icons don't show.

What the FUCK is going on?

Cache is cleared, adblock and noscript disabled, next-to-latest version of Firefox, all system updates installed.

Is this behavior consistent, i.e. it happens on every page load? If so, does it do so under IE?

Sounds like a bit of malware is messing with your network connection. It's definitely not on the board's end.

Sometimes, instead of seeing the rep bars under a poster, I see the word description of the rep...i.e. "poster posts at TK", etc.

Other times, instead of seeing thread icons on the forum page, I see the description of the icon written out - like "Cross" or "$".

    I blame Kyle.

    I'm getting this too.

It's also happening with avatars. In the space where the avatar should be, it'll simply say "User's Avatar" where User is the poster's handle.

Oh, and some of the buttons on the WYSIWYG text editor are showing as text. Also, the green arrow button on the index pages that takes you to new posts. It'll be replaced by a line that says, "Go to new post."

I've found that mousing over these bits of text will make the images show, but they won't show until I mouse over them.

Based on this thread and Uncle Albert's thread having the same or similar complaints from a dozen users using a dozen different ISP's across the nation, I suggest that your hypothesis is wrong.

This computer is clean. I just ran Spybot and a few other programs and found nothing. Also, I'm gonna load the forum on IE, but if it works there, I won't be posting until this is fixed to work on Firefox. There is *no* reason to trust IE. :(

BTW, take a look at UA's thread. I posted some screenshots there that should prove useful.

This is mystifying to me. I view the site with IE and Firefox at work, and Safari at home, and I have no problems like this at all. :mystery:

The screenshots indicated that the browser stopped actually rendering the page partway through. There are a whole host of reasons why this can occur.

Let me give you an example of something here:

That's the path a request from my computer to Wordforge took. That's three packets worth of data. Every page, every image, every line of CSS used to drive the look-and-feel of the site, has to make that trip. At any one of those points, something can go wrong. And that's just out on the net! That doesn't even take into consideration my internal network, any security software I might have set up, and the browser I'm using, nor does it take into consideration Apache, PHP, and other software processes running locally at WF.

The reason why I doubt it's a problem at WF's end is that then, it should present a problem to everyone, not to just the dozen or so people Elwood pointed out intermittently. The dozen people is a good argument, until you consider there's absolutely no control group - it's like testing the growing capacity of different fertilizers, and then dumping chemicals and salt randomly into the grow pots.

It is, actually, loading the alt text for the rep bars for me quite frequently, as well as thread icons.

next time you see it, view the source of the page and paste it into a code block.

Assuming that your browser doesn't get the source fresh when you reload the page; some do.

I have the same problem if I try to view WordForge with Internet Explorer. But with Firefox I have no problem. (And I don't even have a recent version of Firefox, since I use Windows 98 and the recent versions of Firefox won't run on 98.)

Back when I used to use IE all the time, I had that problem occasionally, on certain pages of certain threads. Apparently it was connected with pages where an image had to be loaded from another site. Once that happened, no thread would load correctly until I closed IE and started it again.

As near as I can tell, it happens with all threads now (no, I haven't checked them all, and am not about to), since I returned from scout camp. Something was changed during the month of July that made the board really hard to load. But Firefox 1.5 does it just fine, so I have no worries.

^Excellent, something reproducible. Please copy the source of the screwed up page, and paste it into a [ code] block in this thread.

When I was in tech support for an ISP we used to blame all the hops to our servers for everything :)
Getting a client to do a tracert on their own website deflected tons of stuff that should have been aimed at us :)

    Right Click.

    "view page source"

Then past it into the page using code instead of quote tags (literally replace quote with code).

    I hate Murphy!

Who let Murphy in here?!?!?!?!

Murphy's Law, with a new twist: "If anything can go wrong about going wrong (= go right), it will."

I haven't tried IE here on WordForge in a while, because it was such a mess it was pretty much unreadable. Threads would never load all the graphics, and the whole thing was downright ridiculous. No matter how long I let a page "load," it would never finish loading. It would still have dozens of images to load, sometimes a hundred or more, which would include just about everything that is graphic in nature. It would just stay there, hung up and not loading any more beyond a certain (variable) point.

Since I don't have those problems with Firefox, it was easy enough to just use Firefox for surfing internet. (Other than that, I really hadn't come across a significant difference between the two, despite all the claims of how much better Firefox is than IE.)

But to help you out, I decided to bear with it long enough to give you some code on the problems, and fired up IE. I came to WordForge with it, and started running around the site with it.

    And everything works fine!

So I've got nothing for you... :(

The text that you have entered is too long (134163 characters). Please shorten it to 20000 characters long.

Nothing major, but for some reason Captain J's Avatar isn't loading. Instead a link saying 'Captian J's Avatar' sits there.

    Link goes to:
