I'll come back to the numerous other problems with this survey later. For now I'll just suggest that being friends with someone who thinks you should pay more taxes is maybe a little different from being friends with someone who thinks you should be a second-class citizen.

At Dartmouth University? Sure. In general, though, it feels like so many have already done this, and on all sides.

might be because the lefty policies that conservatives find distasteful are mostly just about money, while the right-wing policies the left finds distasteful are about dehumanizing and demeaning actual people that they (the lefty) have compassion for

OP, this is because right-wingers don't actually take their absurd positions seriously, and are mostly just trolls.

Seen the same kind of conclusions about Right being more willing to date Left than the reverse. But consider:

-Conservatives disagree with lefties and argue that they're wrong.
-Lefties disagree with conservatives and argue that we're evil.

Maybe there's a connection? [otoh, you can't reform stupidity]

Yeah, that's a cute little t-shirt phrase you've got there.

Too bad the Obama years debunk the fuck out of it.

Bwahahahahahahaa!!!! Do you seriously believe this shit?

Did you honestly just say that with a straight face?

Conservative media has been calling liberals the Devil for fucking years. Hell, Conservative senators and congressmen have gotten in on the act.

Now I ain't saying lefties haven't called Conservatives evil. But that's actually because their policies genuinely grind down the little guy in favour of making more fucking money. Just stop, y'know, doing evil and we won't offend you with the label.

You know, just personally I think things have changed. American conservatism had drastically changed in the past few years. The politics of the alt right and Tea Party have become mainstream and it just shows you have American tribalism overtakes political philosophy. The American right has become a breeding ground for intolerance, discrimination, xenophobia, isolationism, racism, sexism, homphobia and religious extremism when once upon a time in the past few decades these things would be on the fringe for the majority of the Republican base. The age of Trump has served to legitimise all of these vile aspects of the far right. The far right has essentially taken over large parts of Republican political positions among day to day Americans. It makes me said when I see the likes of @Paladin, @Man Afraid of his Shoes and @Sean the Puritan defending what is often indefensible just because of their tribal partisanship. The American right today isn't even what the American right was about six or seven years ago, let alone twenty years ago. Everyone is hyper partisan and the worst of it is that on the America has gotten to the stage where people are more concerned about the partisan game than what is right and decent. Hell, hyper partisan American right wingers are so wrapped up in it that they think anyone an inch to the left of them is a "liberal". Let me tell you why "liberals", or rather generally decent people, might have a problem with what currently masquerades as the American right:-

    1) You legitimise and apologise for the actions and anti-semitism of neo-Nazism, or simply turn a blind eye and give Trump a pass for calling some of them "very fine people" that makes you an arsehole.

    2) You support people who are against equal rights for gay people, that makes you an arsehole.

    3) You condone immigration policies in the name of nativism and religious/nationality based discrimination that makes you an arsehole.

    4) You turn a blind eye to your partisan side fear mongering against Jews and Muslims while empowering Christian evangelical extremists, that makes you an arsehole.

    5) You support or apologise for increased isolationism and the degrading of global security, that makes you an arsehole.

    6) You turn a blind eye to the very real possibility your President colluded with the dictator leader of an oppressive foreign nation instead of demanding answers, that makes you an arsehole.

    7) You demonise or turn a blind eye to the demonisation of child victims of mass shootings instead of facing up to the need for a serious, tough conversation on guns, that makes you an arsehole.

    8) You cry about social justice warrior agenda whenever a minority person or woman gets a job in Hollywood even when you don't know whether or not it was due to merit, that makes you an arsehole.

    9) You see Nazis and white supremacists running on Republican tickets and getting elected to state jobs and you turn a blind eye and say nothing, that makes you an arsehole.

    10) You watch your president tell blatant, demonstrably obvious falsehoods day after day and don't question it, that makes you an arsehole.

    11) You support or turn a blind eye to the presidential pardoning of racists like Joe Arpaio, that makes you an arsehole.

These are the things that I can thing of just off the top of my head. They are all things that a mainstream political conservative, who espouses morals and family values, should be opposed to. These are things that have crossed the line into the gutter. That lack basic decency and normality. They are the politics of the nasty and the far right. When you legitimise them and pass them off as normal conservativism is it any wonder the left and the centre are going to think you're arseholes?

My point was already made a few posts above mine by nova: conservative policies are "dehumanizing" and "demeaning." Pure Trumplike rhetoric - you go gal, right-wing extremist-cum-left-wing-extremists are a roar.

The left on this board are like the fish unaware of what "water" is (hint: try peeking out of the bubble world). Although at first I figured all three "fantasy world" comments were because you think you *can* reform stupidity, all Wf evidence to the contrary (though "blind partisanship" would've been better choice of words than "stupidity," as more precise).

Well what do you fucking want?
What does tolerance look like to you??

For us to be FLEXIBLE on whether the LGBT community are to be treated like humans?

For us to be "meh, maybe, who knows?", about there being an intractable invisible sky dictator that hates women?

For us to be "ehhhhh, who can really say???", about whether people with a dark complexion ought to be riddled with bullets for blinking wrong?

What behavior pattern is gonna make Tuttle happy?

I disagree. Those iniquities were always there among a significant portion of conservatives, and preying upon those iniquities became the Republican strategy over the past four or five decades. It's just become more obvious in the internet era when everyone can widely disseminate their terrible opinions.

Yes and no. Trump's election is a symptom of the problem. The internet has "legitimized" these terrible aspects due to wider access to the internet, insular internet pockets of echo chambers, and easier access to blatant propaganda from the likes of Fox News, Alex Jones, and Rush Limbaugh.

Honestly, I haven't ever seen @Man Afraid of his Shoes do this. @Sean the Puritan rarely does this (though, I cannot think of any specific examples, so he might not have). They're both fairly consistent with their political beliefs in terms of not being swayed by blowhard politicians. Do you have any specific examples of either of them doing this?

Hyper partisanship has been around for at least the last 20 years. I remember specific instances in high school of being bullied for being a "liberal" (even though I didn't even identify with politics until at least college).

I haven't seen that side of it that others evidently have (maybe coincidentally I've also never seen facebook). Although I think you're exactly right about some, e.g. religious conservatives' view of pro-abortion supporters. Certainly I won't claim the left is unique in demonizing their opponents. But over the next year I'll elaborate when it makes sense in support of my point.

Anecdotally in addition to nova-like rhetoric (conservative policies demean and dehumanize, while leftist policies have fluffy tails), I've seen it directed at me and others. Now, I didn't utter a word in defense when 14Doc said I come off like an "arrogant prick" because I see the world as it really is and it was a reasonable observation. And I ignore the untrue stuff because I've thick skin and very little (bordering on no) respect for certain members, so I've shrugged off lies and baseless criticisms like being named "racist" or when e.g. Anna claimed I'd support bombing of Muslim holy place (I must be pretty fucking evil if those are true).

Chuppie, Chuppie, Chuppie, you sound like a babe in the woods to me.
    :itsokay:

    You're wearing the wrong glasses.

You're seeing a sane man being eaten away by a brain parasite.
That's an attractive Hollywood narrative, but it's just not objectively true.

I see a man sized parasite wearing a man suit, and poking his ear out the mask pretending it's a brain parasite.

This is what they always were, Chuppie.
    The mask just fell off.

The PC of the 90's slowed them down a bit, but go further back, take a deep dive in the magazine archives for shit on Reagan and Nixon.
We're where those old buzzards wanted us to be.
Everything privatized, everything for the white man, everything "buyer beware", and "devil take the hindmost".

There was never a fringe to this.
The fringe were just the ones who had looser lips.

I've since learned, find the nuts, find the Anne Coulters, and the Alex Joneses, they'll tell you what the "nice ones", really want to do in 20 years.

For me, it's not so much Facebook as people I've known for decades. People that are educated and who I would have thought wouldn't buy the bullshit before Obama got elected. They believe in Pizzagate, Jade Helm, and that any mass shooting perpetrated by a white person never actually happened. That shit is getting more and more mainstream. Again, this is just in my experience. Maybe the people I know are just weird that way. It's been freaking me out lately.

I don't doubt that it happens on the left. Although @El Chup apparently thinks I'm among the most radical of the right, I admit that I find myself thinking that a not unlarge segment of Trump supporters may be evil my own self.
