I think I can speak for most Americans when I say that watching C-Span is more exciting than soccer. Hell, I'd rather watch a bunch of kids play kickball, or better yet, dodgeball.
Soccer is fine with me. Not my idea of entertainment, but I won't put it down. But if you seriously think soccer players are so strong and brave they could play NFL football without pads and helmets, and not all end up paralyzed or worse before halftime . . .
Actually, I think American Football is popular here because it combines all the most interesting aspects of sport - what other sport has 350 pound men exerting domination in the trenches while guys that run 4.3 40s fly down the sidelines? Brilliant acrobatic catches and devastating hits? It's power, it's grace, and it's speed, and the strategy of the sport is one hell of a lot more complex than any other major sport - largely because the rules are more themselves are more diverse. Plus it's the perfect TV sport because you have time to run and take a piss between plays and not miss anything. Unlike soccer, where an exciting 3-2 game you could not see 90% of the game and still not miss anything. Soccer is fun to play, just like baseball. But it's not as interesting to watch.
Could never get into soccer, especially that World Cup stuff. The field is way too big and the pace is slow. I did watch one of those English league games, and I liked it a lot better. Somehow, the field seemed smaller, and things didn't move at a snail's pace. Seeing as I'm not sure whether they use different sized fields for league vs. world cup, I don't know the reason for this, but the league soccer was definitly more interesting to watch. As for the beer ban, here in N. America, they ban bringing your own beverages to the movie theaters, but a lot of people do it anyways. They just sneak it in. Does that happen in the UK as well? Do you get booted if you're caught?
Field sizes- there are minimum and maximum dimensions of the pitch size and as long as it ies in between the two it's legal. Some stadia have the stands almost right on the pitch which can give the impression it is tighter while larger stadiums often have more room. Tempo- British football is renowned for its high tempo and in the past befroe fifa pussified tackling, hard tackles. However, when you watch a league game, you won't always see the best players, lesser players need to run around like idiots and tackle hard to make an impact. When you watch the world cup, you are watching the best players in the world who should theoretically be more technically gifted. They don't charge into silly tackles and play a much more patient passing build up game. If they catch you sneaking cans of beer into the stadium they will boot you out.
