No matter. I'm what you would called "tenured" now (though in Arkansas we do not use that term).

Anyone can get hired if they're the only qualified (on paper) applicant. I think you even said as much last week.

Getting a job is one thing. Keeping it quite another.

But I'm tickled. This is the first time my contract has been renewed without a fight since 2007.

In real life you take what you can get.

In real life, people learn what works and what doesn't to keep steady employment, especially those that are married with children. I work with a lot of men who stay in the military solely because they don't want their family in the streets and put up with random hours or work, months away from home and shitty ass leaders like the one you would've been had you not been too chickenshit to enlist back 20 years ago.

I don't feel like having this go nowhere convo again, but kbow this--you fail at life. Mediocrity is nothing to be proud of, and God help the students in your classes.

In any event "real life" is whatever you make of it, and for most people it's about trying to do the very best to improve and advance yourself in the interests of your family, your children and your own wellbeing. Settling for mediocity, as you put it, is merely cowardice. It's taking the easy way out. Still Kicthens has always been a coward so it's hardly surprising.

But again, it comes back to his pupils. Would you want a teacher supervising your children whose message is "settle for what you can get"? A deeply worrying signal - even more so when you consider the large number of black children he teaches in a poor area. But then he probably doesn't care about that since he's already decided, in his own past words, that these kids can't be taught.

Teachers do have influence upon their students.

But it is not remotely as much as most people (including lots of teachers) think it is.

Your job isn't to influence. That is your mistake. Your job is to bring them knowledge and help them understand articulate it - which sometimes requires you to also present them with a variety of different types of materials, some of which you personally may not accord with.

Even more importantly, just because you think the impact of teachers isn't as high as you want, that is no reason not to do your very utmost to ensure your role has a positive impact. I suspect though that you go into the classroom with a predetermined view and instead spend your time on a vanity project which involves singularly promoting your own views to these children, whether such an approach provides benefit to these pupils or not. That is why you are a worrying human being.
