I am saying at sometime in the last 70 years people could have taken the initiative to learn to swim. They did not despite numerous affordable or even free opportunities so really that excuse is past it's sell by date.

As per the world according to Dinner , 3/4th of all black children are fatherless and I assume you assume their moms are poor. Please explain how a mom working two jobs is gonna have time to keep up swim lessons with no help whether the lessons are free or not.

Tell me how kids can continue what they learn though middle and high schools as they come up through school systems that cut sports in favor of more testing and metal detectors.

It's the same principle. You know parents focus when raising their kids on the experiences and traditions from their own childhood. Somebody who grew up swimming will teach their child to swim. Somebody who didn't might not. It's not about opportunity so much as tradition, and when the tradition was created by lack of opportunity, then we need to recognize and understand that 70 years later, it is still a part of the reason that fewer blacks know how to swim.

It's been "tradition" to straighten our daughters' hair the minute she's old enough to sit in a salon chair because it began in the 1920s as a way to look more acceptable (read: "white"). Eventually,it got to the point that few of us even knew what our own hair texture was. Likely I never would have found out either until circumstance forced me to give up relaxers right around the time that the natural hair care market for blacks was opening up.

My mom, who is predominantly non-black with thin, wavy hair has only just stopped putting relaxer in her hair. Why she ever started when she could always run a comb in hers without breaking is beyond me, but better late than never.

I am saying always blaming things on stuff that happened 70 years ago just doesn't pass muster. It can be more difficult but determined people can often overcome small difficulties and figure out a way to take their kids to free swim lessons. 70 years is n awfully long time to still be blaming stuff on great grandpa and I refuse to believe it was impossible to find a few afternoons in that entire seven decade period if someone wanted to do so.

Dinner, I don't eat grits. But some people do. Some have a long history of grits in their families. They know how to make them right, have had lots of different kinds, and can teach other people how. But me, I'm skeptical. I don't even know what grits are, let alone why I should take time to find out, or learn how to make them. None of my peers are into grits. So why, when I have so much going on in my life, should I bother going out and finding some grits to eat?

My mom's family came out here in the sixties from the South, which is the only reason I, as a California girl, know what they are. I had no idea they weren't just for breakfast until I spent time in the South from being stationed in Mississippi and Louisiana. I'd never seen instant grits until my training school either. But one place in NOLA cooked andoille sausage and chicken together with grits.....so good!
