I think I am able to finally describe one of my problems with DC writing. It doesn't bring me in. I cannot see myself inside the team doing things. It is just an image, a pretty picture.

That is where I think the MCU and other shows like Teen Titans are really written in a way that makes the audience feel like they are in the team without being in the team.

I guess I might use the term lazy writing to mean writing that doesn't suit my personality.

I guess it is a style or ability of the creator to bring people into the theme and get them involved, and I just do not get that with JL and JLU. I get it with some of the JL movies. I think it is the same sort of disconnect I have with the Harry Potter universe. I do not end up seeing myself in that universe, and I think it is the way JK writes wizards as this sort of haughty taughty upper class thing, and calls the audience muggles. You are not bringing me into this universe when you are being racist against regular humans with no real redemption for humans. That is why I consider Little Witch Academia a sort of better Harry potter because even though the humans are not witches they have a purpose and an existence which could be intertwined and valued by both sides with mutual respect.

In the case of JL it is elite group of superheroes who are trying to do good, but are really just freaks and offworlders that are not really doing much to be a part of human existence, while killing a lot of humans very recklessly fighting for their own causes. I am not sure why Teen Titans seems to do better, but I feel like they are part of the community and working with the humans even though the show does nothing to really show this. Somehow JL ends up making me feel alienated from the team if you know what I mean.

I should correct myself calling that Bad writing. I should call it a writing style that does not draw me in like others do because obviously it draws people in. It is just one of those cases where I want to be there with the stories, but I am just not and that disappoints me.

The book "Kingdom Come" addresses exactly this.

Yeah, it doesn't make it into the slog of the series. Without that definition the JL and JLU series is just broke. Also being aware of the idea is not fixing the problem I hqave with connecting. I admit that is just my preference in how to tell a story. I admit that my opinion means nothing aside from discussion.

I checked it out over the weekend. It was good for what it was. It was refreshing to not have the grim and gritty can-beat-anyone-with-enough-prep-time uber-Bat and an upbeat Damian. Owen Wilson is an odd choice for Batman, but oh well.

Y'know what they should do is, release Batgirl, but run the footage through one of those filters that turns it into cel shaded animation first. The bar for quality on animated DC projects is much lower than the one for live action.

    I disagree.
"Batman: Assault On Arkham" is a better Suicide Squad movie than both live-action ones.
"Superman/Batman: Public Enemies" is better than BvS. And I say that as someone who loves BvS.

Plotwise maybe, but I'm talking about production value or whatever you want to call it. It's not Disney-level animation is what I mean.

There was a brief Joker scene in 2 which was either Hamill or someone aping him (I didn't check the credits) but Ackles was doing this particular Batman.

But to go on to my main topic:
    Part Two SUUUUUCKS.

I mean, I'm really lenient with DC animation, even when it's not geniuses like Timm and Co. it's usually a lot more in sync with the vibe of the comics (at least, the comics before they started doing bizarre shit like DeathMetalDarkWhoLaughsHellZombieBullshit special events.

ANYWAY...even I don't have enough grace for this. Most of the first two acts is devoted to one of two storylines - how Kara came to be Harbinger which was....fine. Nothing gripping but sure, tolerable. And the other half was setting up a central villain who only the most deep cut comic readers have ever fucking heard of. If you have to spend a third of your movie explaining who the goddamn Psycho Pirate is, you have chosen the wrong villain. I literally spent have the movie thinking to myself "Who the fuck is THAT supposed to be?"

Then you stir into this shitty effort a bait and switch insult to a big chunk of your audience. Have you seen the previews that tease you with "Batman Beyond is back!"?
No. He's not. Not unless you want to be impressed by a guy who doesn't even fucking speak until halfway through the third act, and has maybe 20 words total. Why bother with that?

And by the end, it hardly clear they have much advanced the story in terms of WTF is ACTUALLY going on.

I'm not sure I'll even bother with the third one.

I haven't watched Crisis yet, but I wanted to chime in that in the original Crisis comics, Psycho Pirate was a fairly important figure. So it would be accurate to the comic to spend a fair amount of time on/with him.

I watched Crisis yesterday, it was okay. DC is just late to the game with the multiverse although I will give the CW some credit for what they did. I hated Kevin Conroy’s Batman in that one. At least they had the good sense to make the Flash’s different with different costumes. It really didn’t get interesting until the second half when they brought all of the heroes together. I’ll watch the second part, but man do I miss the Bruce Tim universe.

In terms of comics, DC basically originated the concept of a multiverse back in the 60s when they said there was a place where their Golden Age heroes still existed separate from their Silver Age heroes. So put some respect on their name.

Just because Marvel has been much more successful lately talking about multiverses in everything from Loki to Dr. Strange to What If? doesn't mean that DC was "late to the game."
