There were some aspects of the first Shazam I liked, but all in all I don't like playing Cap for broad comedy. A little bit of "shit, I'm grown now?!" goes a LONG way.
Gold tier- -Wonder Woman -Man Of Steel -Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice- Extended cut -Justice League- Snyder Cut Silver tier- -The Flash -Birds Of Prey/Harley Quinn -The Suicide Squad Bronze tier- -Aquaman -Shazam Dried cow poop disguisesd as cookie tier- -Suicide Squad -Justice League- Whedon Cut -Wonder Woman 1984 ....haven't seen Shazam 2, or Black Adam, but safe bet they're in the poop-cookie tier.
The Flash *****SPOLIERS***** I expected this movie to either be okay or plain out suck, but I feel like they pulled this off. The story is nothing new, Flash accidentally figures out time travel and uses it to save his mother/father. We've seen this before, but of course they did their own version. Honestly I wish they wouldn't have told us about Keaton coming back as batman and I wish they would have kept Zod a surprise as well. They did kind of trick me into thinking Zod was the main villain, which he was, but it was really about the third Flash trying to stop our Flash. I like that he wasn't just straight up evil, he had an understandable motivation. I liked Supergirl a lot in this. She fits well in what's left of the Snyderverse and this version of the Justice League. I don't think they will carry her over because Barry un-spaghettied mostly everything. This is real shame. That being said, I'm glad they kept Man of Steel in tact, only Superman can stop Zod. One thing that doesn't make sense is Clooney as Bruce Wayne, why? I'm probably in the minority here, but I think Clooney looks the most comic accurate Bruce Wayne and I always liked the casting. He was a good Batman in a bad Batman movie. What I didn't like was giving Nick Cage an action scene and not Christopher Reeve or George Reeves an action scene because the way I interpreted those multiverse scenes is that a similar threat has come to the other Earths and only Superman can stop them. So in the Snyderverse it's Zod, in the Burtonverse it's the giant robot spider, in the Donnerverse it's ?. They could have shown him fighting Braniac. Then they show Adam West Batman, which doesn't have a Superman so Batman is maybe fighting Two Face or something and that's the big threat. In the George Reeves universe it's Lex Luthor. That would have made more sense. If they just wanted to show that there's a multiverse now, then the cameos weren't really needed. The opening sequence was done very well, it reminded me of an opening sequence of the animated Justice League. In fact, the whole movie felt like a live action two part episode of the Justice League. It was funny in parts and very serious when it needed to be.This was the type of DC movie I've been wanting to see. It moved away from the realism of the Nolanverse and The Batman, which is what they need to do if they're going to go forward with a whole new universe. Don't get me wrong, I love those movies, but I also love the wider DC family. Speaking of the Nolanverse, WTF? You give us Nick Cage Superman, a movie that was never made, but you can't give us one last look at Christian Bale's Batman? Overall, this was a well written, well acted heart felt movie with a good story and very good action scenes.I definitely recommend it, but sadly, it puts the final nail in the Snyderverse coffin just as they had finally figured things out. 8.5/10
They did action for Nick Cage, because Nick Cage live-acted the motion capture. They obviously thought having minimum movement for Chris Reeve was respectful, what with him not being alive to give permission.
Plus, Bale would have had to sign off on it, and he probably feels done with DC. Not in a bad way, but just "I did what I did, there doesn't need to be more " kind of thing. Plus, his Batman doesn't mix well with cosmic stuff. Keaton and West had supernatural dancing around the edges (Catwoman's 9 lives in both, the tech bordering on Trek level in West-verse) , so they worked.
For what little it's worth, my rankings in no particular order: Great (i.e. I have watched and enjoyed these movies multiple times, they have a fond place in my heart and would consider independently seeking them out for a just for fun rewatch) None Good (ie, I have fond enough memories of these movies and would consider watching them again if I randomly came across them while flipping channels) Wonder Woman The Suicide Squad Shazam OK (I thought these movies had flaws and entertaining moments, don't have any particular desire to see them again) Black Adam Man of Steel Aquaman Justice League (all cuts) Birds of Prey Batman V. Superman (have only seen the original cuts) Shazam 2 Terrible (I felt like these movies were actively bad and I wish that I could get my money back or erase them from my memory or something) Suicide Squad Wonder Woman 1984
I think I enjoyed Shazam more than Wonder Woman. Man of Steel was some good and some bad and overall eh at best, but I thought there was enough there to build on and maybe the next movie would be the TWoK to its TMP. Instead we got BvS. But those are the only three live action I've seen.
So is it safe to call The Flash a flop? After failing to meet opening weekend expectations, they saw a 73% dip in ticket sales the following week - $15.3 million. Outgrossed by The Elementals and Spiderverse this past weekend I did not see that coming https://gizmodo.com/flash-movie-box-office-disaster-ticket-sales-dc-wb-1850576141
Yes it's safe say it's a flop which is a real shame because it seems like they had finally gotten their shit together with a cohesive entertaining story.
Superman and Lois for "Superman: Legacy" coming fairly soon. https://www.darkhorizons.com/new-superman-legacy-casting-details/
From what I’ve seen around the internet is that some people didn’t go to see this because Cavil isn’t in it.
David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. Yes! That's the Lois I wanted! https://www.darkhorizons.com/dc-sets-its-new-superman-lois-lane/
If the 2013-2020 behind the scenes for the movies aren't "Dark Side Of The Ring" level dark, it's going to be lies.
Eh, I think it's silly to boycott a Flash movie because some other hero doesn't appear in it, but honestly there's loads of things I think hurt the movie, especially the word of mouth. -The special effects are bad. I saw in in a regular theatre, and it was glaring how bad the CGI was. People have said it was supposed to look like that, and if that's true it was a bad choice. -The special effects are bad, just in terms of how they're designed. Big different coloured globes made of pictures slamming into each other? Various heroes inside them staring out into the multiverse blankly? Yay for Nick Cage and the giant spider, though. And so many omissions! No Val Kilmer, No Lynda Carter, no animated Batmen, no tv versions of anyone beyond Adam West... It felt half-assed. -The third act is a massive letdown and also a bummer. I get that it's more or less faithful to the comics, and I it probably would have been unrealistic for things to go the other way, but I can't imagine audiences walking about pumped and happy and ready to recommend it to their friends. -I feel like the story got Keaton's Batman wrong. He successfully cleans up Gotham and just retires to putter around Wayne Manor by himself? No Selina, no one else around at all? He didn't try to expand his crusade outside Gotham? That doesn't feel like any version of Bruce to me.
Oh yeah, and Ezra Miller was okay, but not standalone movie star material. I feel like there's a multiverse out there where the same character could have been played by Jim Parsons, or French Stewart, or Andy Dick, or Peter Scolari, or pretty much anyone that can play a tv-quality awkward autistic nerd character. But Andy Dick also would have done all the crimes like Ezra, so he's my top choice.
Just saw it this afternoon. They didn't knock it out of the park, but it was certainly entertaining and the cameos (particularly the final Bruce Wayne) were great. So glad I avoided spoilers going in. I think with tighter editing, it could have been a great film and probably one of the best of this iteration of the DCCU.
James Gunn Won't Be at Comic-Con 2023, Which Doesn't Bode Well for DC Films He'll be there in 2024, so it sounds like DC won't have too many films coming out next year, but in 2025, it might.
The People's Joker is Getting a U.S. Screening Next Week Too bad @Paladin ’s wandered off again, since IIRC he lives near there and might be able to catch it and give us a report.
It's about a mentally unstable guy who kills a bunch of people. We'll be lucky if Paladin doesn't MIMIC it.
I mean, I half-expect every FF thread to end with the "you get what you FUCKING DESERVE!!!" speech but he wasn't invited on the show to do his skit and he keeps coming back despite the heckling so at this point he's gotta be getting off of public humiliation.
James Gunn says Creature Commandos will be in modern times. Dammit! What I loved about the original comics, was/is they're in WWII. Well...if it's going to be modern, they'd better be in Ukraine vs the Russkies. Better not be some bullshit imaginary war like GI Joe does.
Talk about burring the lead, Nathan Fillion is Guy Gardener! https://variety.com/2023/film/news/...illion-isabela-merced-edi-gathegi-1235667292/
