Which is good, as Williams is past his prime, IMHO. I have a John Williams channel on Pandora, and as you listen to his pieces on it, you can tell a lot of his later works really recycle from his earlier pieces. (Not in the sense that the music from the OT shows up in the PT, but that music from Jaws shows up in Harry Potter.)

Good. I'm glad it's not Giacchino. What he did on Trek was ok, but far too complicated and understated for the big moments of space opera. Also, can anyone hum any of his tunes without listening to them again? I thought not.

I liked the updated originals...except for the CGI-ing Hayden over the original

A lot of what they did with the SEs was fine. It was where they changed something meaningful or added something with no value that they got into trouble.

The originals with updated effects and remastered surround? Yes.

Han shooting Greedo in "self defense?" Scene with Jabba the Hutt that provides no new information? Lots of silly robots and dinosaurs roaming Mos Eisley? Luke screaming as he falls in Cloud City? Footage of Darth Vader returning to his star destroyer during the Bespin chase? Jedi fucking Rocks? Vader's "no" while Emperor fries Luke? Hayden fucking Christensen force ghost? Get that shit outta there.

Thanks, I had blocked the Greedo thing out.

I liked the quote..it may have even been here...

"Greedo did not fire first, Greedo did not fire AT ALL".

I always guessed Hayden as a force ghost came about because Lucas tried to diddle Hayden at one point, and that was Hayden's hush blackmail.

I can't think of ANY addition they made that helped anything.

Disney should just clean up the film, and leave it be.
I don't even want them to pretty up the sabers.
    Fuck that shit.

Oh, I think that some of the changes were good: no more matte lines around spaceships, remastered surround sound, etc. My favorite addition is a subtle but hugely entertaining one: they added a "thunk" sound effect for the stormtrooper knocking his head on the door on the Death Star. Another one I like is that they fixed those few seconds during the Vader/Kenobi duel where it looked like someone forgot to add the glow to Kenobi's light saber.

Changes brought the picture "up to code" (i.e., made it look as good as a picture made recently) I'm generally for. It's the gee-gaw nonsense, unnecessary fluff, and character-altering changes that I oppose.
Don't get me wrong: I want the originals. Just sayin' that not everything done in the SEs was awful. And if the awful things were removed, the SEs would be great.

Worst case scenario, I can torrent and burn the fan editions out there.
But, as a collector, I like the bonuses, and the pretty box, y'know?

Am I the only person who managed to buy an original cut DVD set? Yeah, I know, you guys are all about Blueray, but my unadulterated disks are pretty sweet.

Except for Kenobi's light saber. That shits gotta go.

As someone who only watched Star Wars for the first time when the special editions came out, I don't really have the same issues that you guys have. "Han shoots first" is the only change that seems really objectionable, and having since had the opportunity to watch the originals, I have to say that they look quite dated without the upgrades.

I have that same set of DVDs, but they're (yikes!) non-anamorphic. They really don't look very good on a big screen.
I cringe every time I see it.
As groundbreaking as the VFX were in 1977, some of them were really very weak by 1997 (when the SEs came out).

My preference would've been for the new effects to basically be cleaner, smoother versions of the original shots, kindof like CBS did with Star Trek TOS on Blu-Ray.

No one would have had issues with the SE if Lucas had provided the original versions. Both E.T and Blade Runner did this. There was no excuse for Star Wars not getting the same treatment.

Besides gypping his ex-wife outta royalties for those versions, no.

...seriously, Lucas is a petty little twat, isn't he?

Can we kill this thread in favour of the other one, or do some kind of mega-merge? I have no idea which one to post in anymore...
