I was returning from a business trip this afternoon and saw a car hauler with four or five of those ugly Tesla "trucks" on it driving north on the toll road that runs in front of Eegah's plant outside of Austin. A couple of them were muddy, like they'd been doing testing or something.

Those things are at least twice as ugly IRL as they are in photos.

Somebody pointed out that truck sales in the US really started to take off once the truck makers started building trucks with front-ends that resembled the semis their other divisions were producing. Not sure how that'd work with the Cybertruck.

Yes and no. After all, any kind of decent software out there is getting routine updates on a regular basis, so the fact that Teslas have to do it is no big deal or surprise. However, if this software patch is a government-mandated thing, rather than Tesla saying, "Oh, yeah, we need to fix this." that's a little different. Because if the government has gotten involved, then things have probably been pretty bad for a while. You remember the issue with Ford SUVs rolling over because the recommended tire pressure was too low? It wasn't the government or Ford who figured out that it was a problem. It was newspaper reporters who noticed that there seemed to be an unusually high number of Ford SUVs flipping, and after they investigated and reported on it, NHSTA got involved and forced Ford to do something about it. (Hmm. You don't suppose that one of the reasons billionaires are buying up media companies is so that they can cover up stories about their products killing people, do you?)

This is a new tactic we need to be aware of in the age of technology. It is one thing for the company to be doing their normal update for software, but when the government is stepping in and saying you have to do this now, there is a bigger problem. In the comments, someone has pointed out that the alloy Musk likely used for the truck becomes magnetic when worked, so metal will tend to stick to it, and the alloy that they picked also has low corrosion resistance. So, even if it's not the truck that's rusting, it soon will be.
