Looks like a pretty cool game. I've heard that in-game characters come along and break "the story" by trying to get you to buy expansions/downloadable content (whichever you want to call it). I'm not really a fan of that aspect. I'm gonna wait it out for more opinions I think. In the meantime I think Torchlight should be a pretty fun game to play.
Bought Thursday (PC) installed Friday. First character played Friday night into early early Sat morning. Decided wasn't happy with him. Made second character, decided I didn't want to romance one of the girl's as a girl, remade character again. Third character, started working through the Dalish story, unlocked Arcane Warrior, realized I want to remake character again. All in all, I really like the game - I'm a little annoyed that you don't really have an idea where you want to go with your character (I knew I wanted to try Arcane Warrior with my current character, but had no idea what abilities it has, had I known about the abilities I would have gone a different route, and there doesn't seem to be a "respec" option) So yeah, if you're going to hide the way abilities work from the player, you should definitely have some way to respec the character. It is kind of cool that you have to unlock the specializations, as it makes it feel well "special" of course there's some that you just purchase from a shop, meh. The "ice" line of spells seems a bit overpowered, especially if you plan your battles well - you can keep may monsters locked down with judicious use of cone of cold, and then keep your main target from attacking a good deal of the time with the first power in that tree. Add a few well placed criticals from a rouge and lower level minions disappear in piles of shattered ice in short order. I find that at "normal" or harder difficulties most "red" monsters will slaughter your party without solid tactics and lots of potions. Even at "easy" some red monsters are damn tough to beat. I don't know if the game scales the monsters down, or if it expects you to come back when you're higher level. Nothing like seeing "Immune!" pop above a monsters head when you've just tossed your best spell at it! I think the interaction with the NPCs is good, the gift system is pretty smart (some gifts are specific to certain characters and will give you a huge bonus as well as a cut-scene) Anyway, I'm staying away from spoiler sites and the like, it is very fun discovering stuff on your own (even if that discovery kills your entire party by releasing a nasty monster or trap). The game saves at "important" points (actually a little annoying as I then know I'm up against a big nasty monster or a turning point in the story-line) but at least when you accidentally wander into a dragon's lair you don't have to redo 2 hours of game play. Anyway I've enjoyed all the story parts I've seen, recommend the game to anyone who likes Fantasy RPG games of any genre. The game seems deep enough that you'd have to play through it several times in order to see all the content, I know with just two times going through one prologue there were several different tangents to the story (and I think those will have different effects later, but I'm not sure). Someone mentioned NPCs with "downloadable content" disruptions - and yes there are some, but they are recognizable as such. I actually think it is a great way to do business - we want these kinds of companies to do well so that they'll make more games, right? The interface to download and install content is in the game and it doesn't affect any other plot you might have going on, so the people complaining or probably just bitching to bitch - an involved quest with hours of gameplay is worth a few bucks, certainly cheaper than going out to dinner or something. Anyway, buy it, you'll like it.
They really did a good job with the aurora engine. Toolset is out and you can use it to edit your saved games.
What system specs do you people have? Or are you playing the Xbox version? I wanna get this for my PC but not sure if it can handle it, even though I meet the minimum required specs.
I'm about the same as baba and it runs well. There's been a couple of choppy bits during one of the larger cut-scenes, but I was busy doing things on a different monitor so that might have been why.
It seems to play better than many new games. If you can run NWN2 or HL2 you should be ok. What games work OK on your PC now?
I'll get it and see how it goes, I've been meaning to upgrade my machine for a while anyway. Btw, should I be looking at the medium to higher end Nvidia GTS/GTX cards, or will a decent 9800 do for most games? I don't want to spend more than £100 on a graphix card. I'm crap at choosing hardware.
The GT210/220 seems to be the new entry level video cards... Don't know what PSU you have, but if you have 450W you can get a GTX260...
It's the size of the GTX260 and its ilk that concern me. They are huge. On my ancient mobo, it'll most likely trample some component or two, and may even struggle to fit inside my case.
