Estelle Getty, who played Sofia in the Golden Girls TV show, died at the age of 84. She's in a better place now, as she had been dealing with health problems and dementia for quite some time. When I was a kid, my Grandmother and I didn't agree on much. But, we could always watch Golden Girls on Saturday night and laugh. Even when I couldn't get a date and I felt like I didn't have any friends, Golden Girls made me felt like I kinda did. Have friends, I mean. Estelle Getty was our favorite. She may not be remembered as one of the greats like Lucille Ball, but she was a funny woman. She made me laugh. I even forgive her for "Mannequin" and "Stop, Or My Mom Will Shoot". We all make mistakes. Estelle was one of the good ones. Thank you for being a friend.
Dang. The character of Sophia actually meant something to me because in both her looks and in her words and actions, I swear they based her off of my grandmother. I lost my grandmother 2 years and three weeks ago.
I just hope it's not a lost script of the Golden Palace! *shudder* I've met the three other ladies at various shows throughout the years, but it was always one of my regrets that I never got to meet Estelle. She was fantastic. Best of luck to her beyond the rim.
No. this ep takes place in a mausoleum. The sound and dialog has already been recorded. They just need to lay out the bodies and then dub in new jokes.
Was she a Republican or a Democrat? We need to know so the Interested WF Parties may troll her memory properly.
This is sad. Even in her other roles, she was a sparky, tough old broad who you couldn't help but love (just like Ruth Gordon).
I've caught a few reruns on TV of this show, since I was still practically in diapers myself when this show was still on the air. But man, that show's a riot! It's so sad having dementia. I live next to a caregiver, and one of her patients has had some really bad bouts with it.
Getty was the one bright spot in that movie. Although, it is indeed filled with Kim Cattral's 80s hotness.
I have to add here that, when I first saw Estelle Getty outside of the show, without the makeup and wig, it blew me away. She had disappeared into the character so completely, I thought she really was a little old lady!
Yeah...there were about a half dozen episodes that had flashbacks to the 1950s where she actually got to look herself.
She was very similar to my wife's grandmother (who incidentally also died just about exactly two years ago). Remarkable resemblance actually, but I suspect many Italian immigrants Sophia's age would resemble her.
Estelle Getty is dead......sexy! Just kidding - she played a great character. I can't believe it was twenty years since I used to watch Golden Girls. I remember watching with my wife (then girlfriend) in her Dad's Company's recreational cottage at one of their Family Reunions at Lake Pleasant. Now they made the dam/lake bigger and that whole cottage area is 30 feet under water with bass swimming all around the remains. Really makes you think.
My grandmother has it. The thing with her is not only does she not remember a lot of things, but she can be downright mean when she is having one of her spells. From what I was reading the past few years had been tough for her. She had or her family had cut off communication with her friends and such as well.
Well, this weekend, Lifetime is doing a Golden Girls marathon with showcasing Sofia's top 10 golden moments on Sunday from 12 - 5pm. I'm going to pop some popcorn, bring grandma's ashes off of the mantle, curl up and close the curtains.
My Nan, god rest her, and my mother used to watch Golden Girls religiously, so much so that in recent years my mum has had me order all of the DVDs for her, so I had something of an indoctrination into GG even though I wasn't personally a fan. It's a shame to learn of her passing, but, if I were honest, I'm impressed that they have all lasted as long as they have. I mean you guys knw that Bea Arthur, Getty's daughter in the show, was/is actually a year older, right?
Her funeral was held yesterday. The three remaining Golden Girls did not attend, reportedly due to family wishes. Getty's family had kept the media at bay for years in order to protect her from the glare of the limelight during her failing years, and the attendance of the remaining Golden Girls would have drawn massive press attention. Each woman expressed their adoration for Estelle in her own way.
Yes, I think this was best. Having a big crowd singing "and then there's Maude" would be in poor taste.
I loved Estelle Getty and was really sad when I heard she died. She was the funniest one on the Golden Girls besides Bea Arthur. She always had a story to tell and was always not afraid to voice her opinions no matter how blunt she was! LOL! She will be missed though. So I want to thank her for being a friend to old and young audiences alike.
