The thing about Mustangs, is that yeah, eveyrone has one, b/c they were orginally and have stayed true to the 'everyman's muscle car'. However along with being cheap, they are also easily upgradeable. I mean buy one of the many Mustang magazines and you'll find thousands of different upgrades. So why anyone can go buy a mustang, no one has your mustang. In last month's Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords they ran an article called 'Back-to-Basics Budget 5.0 Buildup' where they tried to make a car that would run sub 10.3 e.t.'s on the cheap. They were able to deliver, spending $4,500 includeing the cost of the car. Of course they did their own work, and had better access to parts than the average enthuist, but they estimated it could all be done by joe for less than $7,000. That's just something you can't do with any other car.
Same concept. Not the 5.0 Windsor (probably most constimizable mass produced fuel injected motor), or the ammount of after market support. Thus higher costs.
Nope. The word is that they're killing off certain designs (Buick LaCrosse) that are RWD when the improved fuel efficiency standards are mandated, but the Camaro is too far along to be canceled now. They're keeping Oshawa alive just to make the damn thing, and besides, who buys a muscle car for fuel efficiency? As for the GTO, who knows. It's just a reworked Holden, and is decidedly superficial. The company is all about the bottom line these days, and we wouldn't even have the Camaro if the public at the Detroit Auto Show didn't shit their pants at the concept car. The board had literally no clue what constitutes a good car; all they see are what sells each quarter and they make their decisions from there.
Also, there's no such thing as "Chevy" or "Pontiac" these days. The individual corporate infrastructures were destroyed, everything is controlled from Detroit now.
Are you trying to say that it's more expensive to upgrade a Camaro or Firebird due to lack of after market support? If so,
Yeah, I know all that. Still, you can only do so much to change the way they look. Not that they look bad, but every other Tom, Dick and Juan seems to drive one here.
You know, you can spend all that money on aftermarket on a plain jane and get less for it than if you spend the money up front for the monikers and then put the goodies on it. Resale man. Most people who put a ton of money in a rod rarely get what they put into it when they sell it, especially as a "clone". After selling off my '69 ragtop, I think this time around, I'll hang onto this one. Here's a link to the 2010 ragtop. Some 2009 pics...
Good to hear that it hasn't been killed. I may have to consider the bitchin' Camaro, but my next car will likely be a Mustang. The Dodge Challenger is intriguing but, as I've mentioned, I currently hate Dodge like cancer.
Is Ancalagon really trying to say that Ford's 351 Windsor is really more marketable and easier to upgrade than Chevrolet's 305 and 350 small blocks? But, I'd rather have a carbed 350 over a fuel infested 350 any day and twice on Sundays. But, then I know what I'm doin'.
My dream car(for the money at my age.) is the car I just bought. The motor and tranny are being rebuilt at my choice and the tranny is getting a new limited slip diff. and a stage 4 clutch. On 110 Octane that car puts 513HP to the wheels and 450TQ. On regular gas, 373HP and 300TQ. I pick it up in a month. It's a VR6 Turbo from a '98 GTi. And it was rebuilt about 200 miles ago, but they're doing it again taking it to a 3.0 from a 2.8. Oh and it'll have different rims when I get it, those were custom made and they were sold off. However, the rims that come with it are BBS RA's.
We started to get a Magnum wagon. Mama Bear decided she liked the Durango better. Decision made. I didn't argue the point 'cause the way it works around here, we swap off on the newer vehicle. It's my turn and I'm plinking on the change jug. Though I don't think we established the impact on the deal of me wrecking the first one. I may have forfieted this round.
Ok call me ignorant, but I thought the windsor was something like a 5.6L (351 CU IN) and that the big time engine that Ford cranked out and that everyone liked to play with was the 351 Cleveland. Also unless I've been smoking something both the 351 Windsor and 351 Cleveland predated the fuel injector. Or am I that out of the loop when it comes to cars due to my main concerns being how many cup holders it has as well as the availability of a DVD player for the kids. Oh and why I hate dodge products...that fucking annoying assed bell that goes off like a two dollar whore with a $50 being waved in her face if you dont buckle your seat belt within 10 seconds of getting in the car. For fucks sake if Im just tooling around a short distance, say in an office park parking lot at 5mph , I dont need to wear a fucking seatbelt. Get off my ass already!!!!
Are you kidding me?!? Next time you're at a bookstore, leaf through a copy of Car Craft, Popular Hot Rodding, Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords, or Mustangs and Fords. The possibilities are limitless...
Yep. Common sense. More engines produced means more spare parts to be found, thus cheaper. More aftermarket support means more parts to be found, thus cheaper.
Ohhhhh yes, so would i. Although i've always been rather partial to the Caterham Superlight. I'd be straight off to Germany with that sucker to do at least 30 laps of the 'ring
Your pardon, sheriff...but those fuel "infested" engines are more fuel-efficient and better running that those sporting what's basically a small toilet on the intake.
The Mustang 5.0 engine basically created today's aftermarket performance parts industry, and to this day still dominates it.
Actually it was the early Hondas in Japan and the 1st generation VW Gti's in the states that really created the "aftermarket" parts industry. The thing is, even with your "huge" V8's and your "muscle" cars, you still can't take a turn for shit and my little V-Dub will still kick your ass. It's all about power-to-weight ladies. My 1600lb VW putting out 500HP will eat your '66 Stang putting out the same amount. Because your Stang ways twice as much. And I'm still able to take a turn without sliding off the road. Now don't get me wrong, I love good old American Muscle, but I love the German quality and customization soo much more. Oh and I hate ricers with a passion. I can't wait to just see the looks on the high school kids faces when they realize their Honda ain't shit.
Never heard of the fox body mustang, which is the 5.0 I'm talking about? It's damn near same size as that VW of yours, but without looking like something Mr. Bean would drive....
Oh and I know this isn't a scientific survey or anything, but yesterday was new magazine day at the PX. So I got to check out the full rack of mags. Besides Mustangs and Fords, there was also Modified Mustangs and 5.0 Mustang. No Camaro and/or Firebird mags.
That's because Camaro and Firebird fanatics don't need a magazine to figure out how to hop up their rides.
