Dany killing or terrorizing everyone, and becoming unbeatable tyrant of Westeros.
GRR said the ending is "bittersweet".
    Doomsday isn't bittersweet.
Our heroes have to dig out a little bit of a win somehow.

Also, given how important they were to the plot of last night's episode, we probably should've reconsidered our Saturday night movie choice because every time bells were referenced I kept hearing the chorus of this song. :bergman:

This is Game of Thrones, not Barney the Dinosaur where everyone sits around and licks Dinosaur pussy

Considering this story about horrible people living in a horrible time in a horrible place came from the mind of GRR, his definition of bittersweet might be a tad different than yours

I wouldn't hold your breath for a happy ending

Dany = Anakin Skywalker. Grandiose visions of ruling the universe with wisdom and justice, but wants to do so unilaterally, via authoritarianism and fascism. Believes she's entitled to absolute rule because of divine bloodlines and a big army. Anakin wants to bypass and dissolve the Senate because it was corrupt and useless. Dany wants to "break the wheel" because the system of ruling houses was corrupt and useless and victimized the little people (although it could be argued all the various ruling houses provided a system of checks and balances for each other, keeping any one of them from overreaching and going rouge). So down with the rich and powerful and hooray for the poor and downtrodden. How very Occupy Wall Street.

So Dany has her "turn to the Dark Side" moment, inexplicably going apeshit when the bells start ringing, raining fire and death on the innocent citizenry, completely betraying all her earlier rhetoric about protecting those who can't protect themselves. Just like Anakin kills Mace Windu, turns to the Dark Side, and slaughters all the innocent Younglings. So much for his Jedi vows. This is Dany's point of no return, after which no excuse or rationalization will suffice.

I don't really have a problem with the story taking this dark turn, GoT is a dark show, none of the characters are pure and blameless (maybe Sansa? Has she ever killed anyone?), so most everyone probably deserves a dark fate. And I don't have a problem with Dark Dany, because I think this has been foreshadowed for a long time. Dany has never shied away from ruthlessly enforcing her worldview, killing anyone and everyone who got in her way. She's vain, entitled, and intolerant of dissent.

No, my problem is the rushed pacing and the regrettable decision to try and wrap this whole thing up in 6 episodes (despite HBO being willing to shell out more money to extend the series, according to recent reports). There's been no time to develop anything, and the show has completely lost all it's subtlety and nuance. Seven seasons of build-up for the Night King, and he's offed in one episode? It's DS9 Season 7 Syndrome - waste a bunch of time on useless stuff (baseball vs. Vulcans episode, Ezri family drama episode, save hologram Vic from holographic gangsters episode), and then try to squash everything into the final seven or eight shows.

I loved this episode, best of the season.

War is brutal and painful. People die, many of them innocents. When you ally yourself with those best at fighting wars you will end up with people who fight for fightings sake.

There was no way anyone trying to take Kings Landing could have done it without massive destruction and bloodshed. Showing that viscerally and without glory is perfect.

So I'm re-watching, and at the pivotal time during the lull in the battle for the city, and Danny's perched on her high spot hearing voices all over the city yelling "Ring the Bell!...Ring the Bell...Ring the Bell", did I hear somebody yell "We're Fucked!"?

    :edit:

Yep. Just watched that scene again, and someone definately yells, "We're Fucked!"

In all the previous seasons the people burned deserved it. They were enemies.

The people in Kings Landing had surrendered. Even Qyburn knew it was time to go and was telling Cersei it's time to leave.

Dany was a person who freed the "little people" in previous seasons.

In Kings Landing she set them on fire because she believes the kingdom will only bend the knee if they fear her.

I think that she made the decision to burn Kings Landing long before the battle.

It was when she made the rule by fear comment to Jon.

Yeah and even then they had caused a lot of damage and killed a bunch of people before then. Think the Dothraki would have been peaceful with the surrendered citizens?

Military targets in the city. The walls basically. Yes some civilians got in the way as it is a city after all but for the most part things were coming to a stop when the bells started ringing and the Lannister troops started throwing down their swords.

And yes the Dothraki would have been peaceful because they follow Dany's word. If she gave the word to not be assholes they'd do it. Same with the Unsullied.

I just read and remembered that with Varys dead we will not get an answer.......

Varys was castrated by that sorcerer. Varys said the sorcerer threw the body parts into the fire and spoke. The fire spoke back. We never learned what was said and who said it.

I guess Tyrion forgot to ask about it before Varys got burned.

I thought this was not that good of an episode, and I've actually been liking the episodes so far this season.

I don't understand why Dany felt the need to slaughter upwards of 500,000 innocent civilians just to get at Cersei. Why not just fly straight to the Red Keep? Why murder so many people after they've surrendered? I don't know. I get that she was upset about Missandre, but surely after taking out ALL of the scorpions and a good chunk of Cersei's army, I feel like the only thing left was to take on Cersei. I get that Dany has burnt people before, but she has at least had reasons. The reasons that the show writers offered is something about her looking at the Red Keep and thinking "my ancestors built this a thousand years ago and if I can't have it no one can." But that's not true at all. The Red keep was built at least 250 years prior, and Kings Landing 300 years prior... and it still doesn't justify murdering half a milllion civilians.

This episode felt especially rushed with the shortened season. So many things that should have been built up over the course of a season got crushed into one or two episodes.

Varys's plot should have least been dragged on for one more episode. What a pathetic ending for one of the strongest characters in terms of plot development. I'm hoping he got some of his letters off so that the secret spreads.

Jamie had a fucking awful character ending given his character arc. It felt completely out of character. Tyrion likewise felt completely out of character trying to save Cersei. Fuck, even Cersei felt completely out of character just giving up like that. I would have thought she'd at least have some more Wildfire booby traps set up.

Arya was useless this episode, except for giving us some great on the ground scenes of the destruction of Kings Landing. John was decent this episode because he tried to put a stop to it.

Euron was a pointless character, holy christ. So much worse than the books.

The only good part of this episode was the Hound and the Mountain's battle. So much built up to that, completely in character, and completely believable that the only way for the Hound to kill his brother was to sacrifice himself. Especially after the Mountain became undead and would only be killed via beheading or fire. And what a great battle scene on that broken staircase with Kings Landing blazing in the background.

Overall, my main beef with this episode is that the plot should have been spread across 2 or 3 episodes. Not the strongest episode, but by no means the weakest episode. Still, I expected more from the penultimate episode.

Also, it's pretty obvious that in the next episode: (1) Dany will execute Tyrion for betraying her; (2) Jon and Dany will beef; and (3) Arya will assassinate Dany and secure Jon's place as King of what's left of the Realm.

They had surrendered, but they hadn't surrendered due to love of her. They surrendered because in the moment they were scared, but over time she knew that her support would erode and the other houses would push back against her.

Earlier in the episode Jon Snow rejected her romantic advances, the thought of an alliance where he sits alongside her on the throne was dead.

So in her logic she decides that she needs to put the fear into everyone so much that they never dare rise against her.

Have we been watching the same show?

Danaerys was always a bit... unhinged.

This is not 20/20 hindsight. The darkness in her was pretty evident from the beginning. I'm glad we finally saw what a psycho bitch she is. The only reason Jon Snow isn't a full-on psycho is because he's only half Targaryen.

    This.

She’s literally the product of three generations of incest from a family known specifically for going crazy and killing people with fire. She's displayed these tendencies as far back as S2.
