Danni's turn wasn't the problem - the mad Targy thing had been well telegraphed.

In it's prime, the series excelled at shocking twists and turns that made sense on further examination. Take The Red Wedding, or Cersei laying waste to half of King's Landing's nobility. While these events were stunning (and fucking entertaining), they fit the characterisations deftly crafted across the seasons, even if you didn't see them coming. It was perfectly believable Tywin & Walder Frey would conspire to wipe out The Starks; we knew Cersei well enough to know she believed at her core that you win - or you die.

Dany sought to break the wheel. Yes, she killed wholesale, but she deployed her deadly arsenal against those who were aggressive towards her, or those who stood between her and her claim. She wasn't indifferent to collateral damage - remember when she locked up her dragons after they BBQ'ed a kid? She had empathy for those under the heel of Westeros's ruling class. She was - wait - someone flipped the Targy coin fuck fuck fuck BURN THEM ALL!!!11

There wasn't enough - there simply wasn't enough development of that turn. I could've bought into it, just as I did any other number of twists and turns throughout the series. But they put their foot down in the final stretch and steamrolled over character development because they wanted to get to Star Wars ASAP.

Ditto The White Walkers. All that build up, one battle and ... they're gone. What motivated The Night King? He wanted to extinguish the memory of the world held in Bran. Well that was worth 8 years build up -- cheers!

The problem with Danni is she didn’t give people a choice. It was her way or the highway. The Starks were given a choice on how to rule and in kind, they gave the people a choice. Around the sixth season, it seemed clear that there was going to be some form of democracy. It’s even alluded to when someone, I forget who, pointed out that the Night Watch chooses their king differently. I personally think having dragons is equivalent to a country that has nukes. Arrogance follows. Only a person like John Snow would have restraint. As far as the White Walkers, the battles were badass. I can forgive the short time we had with them. The Night King just wanted to eradicate the living. It does make me wonder how past generations survived them if nobody else thought to kill him and not the undead army.

Danni’s change came out of nowhere.
No reason whatsoever to put Bran on the throne.
Cerci needed to be murdered, not killed by a building falling in on her

It’s been several years, but, those were the highlights, to me, where season 8 went off the rails.

Then you obviously weren't watching the same show as everyone else.

I think the biggest problem with Danni is they didn't tell the actress that the turn was coming until they read the script for the last episode.

They should have given her a better chance to enact it over the course of season 8.

Of course, season 8 should have been longer as well, they were offered more eps but wanted to run off and do Star Wars - which fell through because they screwed up season 8.

It's still a great series IMO. But it fell out of the zeitgeist quickly because the ending was far weaker than the rest of the show.

or, you just saw the obvious without looking beneath. In EVERY situation where it's the people vs what promotes her status, she always chose the people. For her to decide to kill the entire population of Kings Landing was out of character.

Allow me to refer you to this post from three years ago.

Danni was always a homicidal maniac.

What the fuck do I care what you posted 3 years ago? I'm telling you my observations of tv show. In my mind, she was way out of character killing everyone in KL.

That's nice, but objectively speaking (and not a matter of opinion) it was already well-established that Daenerys was a mass murderer. So the fact that she killed everyone in King's Landing was not out of character at all.

Ok, asshole. if it means this much to you that you ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY HAVE to be correct. then you say you are correct and ignore my post. HOWEVER, you're a stupid dick if you think it was in character.

Here's the crazy thing.. it's obvious that Dany had an evil streak. There are several instances where her Jorah, Ser Barristan Selmy and even Darrio Naeharis advised her to check her worst impulses. I thought she learned lessons from all that. When she took the strong principled stance against slavery, I thought that was her own inclinations. The minute she got away from all her advisers, she went crazy. Death and slavery for all. I get it, she was desperate and sometimes people do things outside their character when they get that way, but like everyone else here said, they needed to flesh it out better.

I think the dragons gave her a sense of arrogance and you know what they say about absolute power.

Agreed, that line about choice and her thinking she's the sole arbiter over people's lives sealed her fate. She would have been a worse tyrant than any of the Lanisters.

That last season really soured my view of that show. Can't believe I named my daughter after one of its characters.

Not to mention two of the dragons being killed probably sent her into a grief spiral. Remember, they were her children.
