http://www.travelandescape.ca/2013/07/russia-says-it-will-arrest-openly-gay-tourists/ Well, he CAN travel to Russia, he just can't be his usually flamboyant self. In terms of the history of gay rights, is hating on gays something new? Is it christianity's fault that we have Victorian era views on sex? I know the Greeks found it acceptable to be in a homo relationship and have a little boy on the side to assfuck at their leisure, but what about before that? Did the Huns, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Sumerians persecute? I think the Chinese had a hands off mentality with queers. It was more like "Ha ha, you are gaaaay!" rather than "you deserve death!" My best friend's cousin is gay but he doesn't hit on me, though I heard from people he finds me attractive.
Well, I never planned on visiting Russia anyway. Still, any idea that the old USSR is long gone should be laid to rest with all of the recent authoritarianism being handed down by ol' Vladimir. Sad, though. I have a friend who lives in Russia, and she agrees with the sentiment that gay people should stay as far away from the Motherland as possible, that they're degenerates. Yet she spent a great deal of time with me and my friends when we were in Chicago during that Trek con a few years back. We laughed, traded stories, had lunch together, and at no time did it occur to her that one of us was gay, the other bisexual/pansexual, and the others completely supportive of it. I hate it when people judge without knowing anything about whom they've chosen to condemn. I guess we've still got a long way to go as human beings.
Oh MY! If I really felt like being Trolly McTrollerson, I'd find one of those photos from Iran, with a crane in them, and the caption of "a couple well-hung faggots."
The hating on gays thing has been around a long time, but not as severe worldwide as it has become since the 1800's.
Ummm...call me "out of the loop" here but - what exactly is a "pansexual?" I'm hoping it doesn't involve cooking ware. Anyway, there are people who seem stereotypically gay who are not. Somebody's opinion could fine/imprison you? WTF? There should be a test (for males anyway). As soon as you get off the jet a smoking hot Russian babe should start blowing you. If you don't respond accordingly, you get another chance with a different babe. Then one last chance, and it's three strikes you're out, don't even leave the airport and catch the first jet back from where you came.
I spent a few days in Moscow in 2001 and then it seemed like it was on a pretty cosmopolitan trajectory. "Before the dark times. Before the Empire."
A pansexual is someone who does not identify gender as a requirement for attraction. Here's the Wiki definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pansexuality Also, it seems from the Wiki page, we have a flag now. I guess that's good. That's the craziest part. "Hmm, gay people don't seem like moral degenerates to me." *boot* out of the country! That test wouldn't work on me, but I would be very happy to take it anyway.
To perhaps broaden their scope of the world? To enjoy the scenery? to visit the Kremlin, visiting great museums, taking in a new culture and experience? Things you would have no idea about though.
I'm saying, if there was such thing as the fictional character Gay Sulu, he'd not be welcome in Russia. What the hell does this hafta do with George Takei and why do you bring up the actor? You are trying to cause trouble, methinks.
Re: Actor =/= Role Of course. But *if* there was, he'd be welcome in Russia. His gay counterpart, however, would not. Quit bringing gay George Takei into this.
Re: Actor =/= Role Who is "his gay counterpart," and why are you fantasizing about him? I haven't mentioned Takei.
That's not true, I've spent time in Moscow and outside of Moscow. Plenty to do and see outside of Moscow.
I've traveled plenty, sport. I'm sure you're just upset because you'll be detained at the airport, now.
I can think of quite a few. Why am I not surprised you find the former Soviet Union so interesting? :
I'd like to here about these great things in Russia. Tour of Chernobyl?? Visit a gulag? Camping in Siberia?
If you want to talk about shitholes, how about India? Hell, I know people who have emigrated from there who refuse to go back. That's how big of a shithole India is.
Chernobyl is not in Russia, mewa, The trans-Siberian railroad is something I'd like to travel. And also to see Red Square, The Winter Palace, The Motherland Calls (in the former Stalingrad), the space museums, the road of life... And yeah, the gulags too.
