Yup, I'm in a hard-hit area. We've had a month's worth of rain in the last 6 hours here and we've been put on evacuation standby in case the river bursts it's banks. High tide is at 1am... until then it's going to be dodgy because it's still pissing it down and there is nowhere for he water to drain off. This is a pic of my driveway:- I dunno if you can tell, but it's actually raised -- there's about 5 inches of water on the grass at the side I've had to barracade the pond, although I could lose my fish overnight, I dunno. I've lost all my frogs Maybe there's something to this global warming business after all
I hope your local streams and rivers can just cope with enough to mitigate any flooding near you. Its bad here but not that bad, the west coast is getting off relatively lightly. Everything is totaly soaked, but the water table is coping so far
Ugh.. would you mind sending some of that over to Cali? It's been dry here this year. Surprisingly few fires in LA, but there was a brush fire in Oakland near the tunnel the other day that has a lot of people spooked.
I just got home from Essex yesterday and there was some scattered light rain, but some pleasant sunshine in between. Where are you in the UK, Summerteeth?
We got the near total humidity and a little rain down here. Anyone want tons of humid air in exchange for cooling rain showers that don't feel like a squadron of B17s are spitting on you?
"!" I was spared! It was a bit frightening in the wee hours as high tide came, but luckily there was no breach. Once the tide had gone, the water was able to drain off and this morning everything is soggy, but not covered over. All the drains are still packed, though. I lost my fry out of the pond Gross as it is, there's a few dead baby tiddler fishies on the lawn this morning, but my grown fish were contained. Lucky escape!
Glad to hear you all are still safe. Keep in touch. Seeing as how I'm looking at severe thunderstorms (anything from 2-6" daily possible) all this week, I empathize deeply.
"Glug" isn't exactly respectful of the poor bugger who drowned in Hull, is it? (Kids nowadays, they've got no compassion. Why, back in my day....)
Get up this morning expecting the forcasted heavy rain and strong winds and its clear blue sky and hardly a breath of wind Glad things weren't too bad for you summer
^We've got the strong winds. I decided to get as much washing as possible done before it starts raining again.
Was blowing like mad at 4am when i was out and about. Looks like big lumps of england flooded. Met office still says there are 163 flood warnings still on the go and will have rain for 3 more days.
There was one helluva wind in Fulham last night and it was pretty cold too. GF and I had to snuggle up pretty close in order to warm ourselves up. So naturally I'm looking forward to more foul weather later today
Well if it takes out part of the north that won't be so bad. Once the northerners are swept away us superior folks can move up and away from the Poles and illegals.
You're kidding right? It's known as "Little Latvia" around here (although the immigrants are mostly Poles. Geography isn't our strong point -- the world ends at Grantham)
I'd like to be smug about the sun we've had over the last two days, but I fear that will just tempt the gods... We've had rain obviously, but nothing out of the ordinary for April (?!?!)
About half of Lincolnshire properly belongs under water, anyway. If it were, there wouldn't be any need for the web-footers to complain about "immigrants".
I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. It seems like a convoluted jibe of some kind, although for it to invoke a reaction one would have to know what the hell you're on about in the first place. And, indeed, to be a native of Lincolnshire.
Jibe? It's merely a kind of melange of a reply to your post #22. 1) Southern Lincolnshire has long been a redoubt of the less-salubrious elements of the British far-right from the NF back in the 1970s, to the BNP nowadays (how do I know? A combination of having been an active anti-fascist for 25 years, and because I have contacts in the area). It's, of course, worse now because of the influx of eastern and central European EU members exercising their right to work here. 2) Vast tracts of Southern and central Lincolnshire are reclaimed land. That being so, not only are those places likely to end up under water due to climate change, they, on the balance, probably deserve to, as well. If such an inundation DID happen, none of the current carping would take place. No land=no jobs=no "foreigners" "stealing" jobs. And, BONUS!! Dead fascists. Oh, and one "provokes" a reaction, one "invokes" a demon. I hope you're not accusing me of implying you're a demon? Can I give you a small piece of very well-meant advice? Wind your neck in a bit, because passive-aggressive behaviour impresses no-one, it usually alienates them.
That's all very interesting, Pan. But my whole point is that I'm from Yorkshire, not Lincolnshire, there was a degree of self depreciation with the 'world ends at Grantham' remark as a nod to the county's insular thinking. That, and I failed to follow your train of thought in the conversation.
I got that Pan was talking about Lincolnshire being Fenland, but then I'm close enough to Norfolk to hear about such stuff constantly on the local news. Large tracts of Norfolk could do with inundation, too...
