I just got a fancy new graphics card at work, and I'd like to take advantage of it. Are there any good games that don't require a subscription or online access or anything like that?
Dragon Age Inquisition has just come out, and seems excellent after about ten hours, if it's the kind of game you're into.
What kind of game are you looking for? Most PC games don't require a subscription to play unless you count Steam as that. Just MMO's really.
Did you ever play antichamber? That's pretty much what comes to mind for that. There's also Quantum Conundrum which was made by Kim Swift the originator of Portal. Fez is a 2D/3D puzzle game that's really cool too. They're not super taxing on a video card but Antichamber looks nice. Middle-Earth: Shadows of Mordor would probably look pretty good on a nice video card, and people really liked that game when it came out.
So Portal 1 or 2?!? X- Com Enemy Unknown/Within if you like TBS games... Dishonored is a First Person Sneaking game...
Oh, wait. I just realised you ruled out online access altogether. Inquisition is one of those games that force you to register online before you can play, for absolutely no reason whatsoever other than to make sure that any good impression you build up through the excellent game itself isn't transferred to your image of the publisher, EA, but only its studio, Bioware.
Considering the number of PC gamers who feel entitled to pirate games using whatever flimsy justifications they use. As much as I dislike it, I can't really fault devs for draconian DRM methods. And yes, I'm a long time PC gamer.
Well, since these restrictions only apply to the non-pirated version, I guess it gives some people a reason to pirate the game who would otherwise buy it. So while I'm with you on the morality, I do fault them for the stupidity.
Many pirated games don't work well when cracked. Also devs and publishers have gotten more creative. They release their own game to the pirate scene...but it has their own version of "discourage" built in.
Far more often the DRM interferes with gameplay. I can't remember the last time I didn't download a crack for a game I bought.
I have never had a problem with any version of DRM ever. It's either crap PCs or ego's that have problems with it. Mostly the latter.
I guess it depends on what types of games you are into? If you want to play something that is really going to push your graphics card, you probably want to stick with first person shooters or RPGs. Strategy games, simulation games, and somewhat older games probably don't have intense graphical requirements. You could wait for Star Citizen to come out. That looks like it will be a beast of a game. I think it is primarily a flight sim like the old X-Wing/TIE Fighter/Wing Commander games although probably much more expansive. I mostly do a lot of retro gaming or indie gaming, which tends to not require high level graphics. Some other recent, big budget games I own include: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Super Street Fighter IV Starcraft II Bioshock Infinite Civilization V Shogun: Total War II Everything else I play on my PC is retro/emulated/indie and not particularly system intensive.
Dragon Age Inquisition is really great, but you really need the story background so you would have to read the wiki articles on it. It's extremely story heavy.
