Aw man. :( I'm sorry Garamet. I didn't mean it. Regionalism's bad. I'm sure those other places will get it too real soon. :itsokay:

here's google fiber's website. It allows entering your address and email to get updates when it will be available, and also to express interest.

I'm interested. At $70/month it's competitive with other providers that are around $50 for 20Mbps service. I'm not sure I can perceive a difference from the added bandwidth though: the weakest link will be elsewhere. The machines on my home LAN never talk to each other faster than 150Mbps on a 1000Mbps network and that's only when I'm moving large files around.

To be fair Google has said it wants to target cities with high prices and slow speeds because that gives them the greatest competitive advantage but also because it scares complacent local cable monopolies and forces them to start upgrading their own networks. Just the threat that Google might come to a city causes the local cable company to start improving speeds and lowering prices. Google knows it can't afford to wire the whole country on its own so spurring existing broad band providers to improve their service is part of Google's plan to get the whole country up to true high speed internet.

Hell, Google still profits even if it doesn't directly provide the service because the faster the internet the more people use the Internet for additional things and thus the more Google is likely to profit via its core search and advertising services.

If anything characterizes "high prices and slow speeds" it would be the L.A. market. :sigh:

The business wogs posit this as the driver behind Google's investment in satellite technology. Broader audience for ads, more ads, faster ads.

I'd been considering a move there in the next few months. Which company(-ies) should I absolutely avoid?

Hotlanta is a given - being "the hub" of The South and all. It's like Rome - all roads/air travel corridors lead to Atlanta.
Not Rome, Georgia of course so nobody is mistaken here.

Don't forget the entertainment industry as well. Its mainly music production, but there is some TV production here as well. There's also Vanderbilt University, which is a major research center in a number of different fields (primarily medical, but there are a few others as well).

It does make you wonder, though, why they're not looking at Oak Ridge, TN. What with there being a major research facility there.

They've probably already got super sekrit government fibre. Other than that, it's just Knoxville...

...and don't get me wrong. I love Knoxville. I got friends and family there and lived there for a while. It was on the short list of where I wanted to go when we were doing the Memphis Exodus of 2010....but the only thing I can think of is UT, Petros, and Goo-Goo Clusters.

I saw some Goo-Goo Clusters at Cracker Barrel the other night. BTW I saw the mother of all coffee mugs for sale too.

I'd be happy to see it come to Boise, but I'm not holding my breath. It would be fun to see CableOne and CenturyLink get a hotfoot though. Maybe we can start a rumor that it's coming to Boise.

True, but one of the things Google has revealed is that their primary targets are places with major backbones already in place. That's why they're going to Provost, UT. The university there has a major fiber backbone running to it. I'd think Knoxvegas would have that as well.

I don't know about Knoxville, but Memphis has a 10 gigabit SONET ring backbone.
