    [yt="So I Married An Axe Murderer"]y5Q8SRwIo3E[/yt]

    A fairly derivative and formulaic (but not entirely unpleasant) flick, featuring Mike Meyers' first Big Screen appearance with the Scottish accent. The "pentavret speech" is still great for a laugh.

    [yt="The Shining"]2TVooUHN7j4[/yt]

    Kubrick's cinematic bastardization of King's novel didn't really deliver on it's promises, but did produce this bit of iconic Nicholson.

    [yt="The Exorcist"]d1o8Et76d6o[/yt]

    As much as this film suggested dialogues in regard to the nature of religion's "good vs. evil" scenario, alienation of the individual and the impassivity of medicine, The Exorcist assaulted our notions of security within our own homes, our own beds. "No matter how safe you feel under those covers," came the message from Friedkin and Blatty, "this evil is going to have it's way with you". Ironically at the time, the film disturbed audiences enough to cause more than a few sleepless nights.

    [yt="Tombstone"]E1vsmpGfB9Q[/yt]

    There are so many great moments in this flick, it's hard to choose just one (hell, you could fill a thread with Kilmer's performance alone). The walk to the OK Corral is striking. (thanks for the reminder, Muad)

    (...and thanks to Paladin for the previous YouTube clip post......great idea)

    The final scene in Last of the Mohicans. The one evil dude kills the one young dude. Old Pops comes running in and you think it's gonna be a big fight scene. Instead, Pops dominates the evil dude and kills him right quick. Love it.

    10 more...

    Ran: Akira Kurosawa's re-telling of King Lear, set in feudal Japan. This is full of the samurai action and spectacle you'd expect in a Kurosawa film, but it's more than a samurai film. Like Lear, Hidetora, the prideful, aging head of house Ichimonji, unwisely divides his kingdom among his children, much to his later sorrow. Hidetora's sons are brought to war against their father and one another by the scheming of a truly great villain: Lady Kaede. The image below is the greatest sequence of the film: Hidetora's castle burns, and the old king, probably now insane, walks out into the wilderness. Years before CGI, this had to be done in one take: the full-size castle set was literally burned down and could not be replaced. This is truly a spectacular scene.

    [IMG]

    Chinatown: the infamous scene where detective Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) learns the truth about the relationship between Evelyn (Faye Dunaway) and Kathryn.

    [yt="Chinatown"]HuAZGFYW6DE[/yt]

    The Maltese Falcon: this classic Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) detective story revolves around the pursuit of an ancient falcon statue by a cast of very interesting characters. I like the scene where Spade meets Joel Cairo (Peter Lorre). Note how, though it can't be said outright in a 1940 film, the viewer is clearly made aware that Cairo is a homosexual.

    [yt="The Maltese Falcon"]LqOlZ_SUEnA[/yt]

    The Silence of the Lambs: this is probably my all-time favorite movie. Although it's chock full of great moments, many centering around Dr. Hannibal Lector (Anthony Hopkins), my favorite moment is just before the climax when an FBI raid is conducted on what is believed the hideout of serial killer Buffalo Bill. Finding the house empty, lead FBI man Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) realizes that his young protege, Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), may be closer to the murderer than she suspects...

    [yt="The Silence of the Lambs"]I5hdE7m_c3w[/yt]

    The Untouchables: After his organization suffers a setback by a raid from crusading G-men led by Elliot Ness (Kevin Costner), gangster boss Al Capone (Robert DeNiro) gives his lieutenants a little peptalk, using baseball as a metaphor. Brutal and unforgettable.

    [yt="The Untouchables"]GkJmSUhNBHY[/yt]

    Heat: aside from it being a legendary confrontation of Al Pacino (as cop Hanna) and Robert DeNiro (as crook McCauley), this crime drama has the single best gunfight in movie history in it. And here it is...

    [yt="Heat"]c6ovm7ezVRM[/yt]

    Smokey and the Bandit: few antagonists can be menacing when they're so comical, but Jackie Gleason's Sheriff Bufford T. Justice pulls it off beautifully. I love his introduction.

    [yt="Smokey and the Bandit"]U_IR0Tmem-E[/yt]

    The Empire Strikes Back: yes, many people will come up with this one: the finale of Luke's devastating duel with Darth Vader. I was 11 years old when it came out and the revelation hit me like a truck (even though one of my asshole nephews actually spoiled it for me several days before :garamet:).

    [yt="The Empire Strikes Back"]h6sj89xgnl4[/yt]

    As Good as it Gets: obsessive-compulsive Jack Nicholson is on the verge of winning the heart of the waitress (Helen Hunt) he's fallen for. After some obnoxious behavior on his part, she threatens to call off their date unless he comes through with a compliment for her. He starts out in a roundabout way, talking about his medications, but delivers one for the ages...

    [yt="As Good as it Gets"]FbyP8gbb1hw[/yt]

    Glengarry Glen Ross: this tale of nearly down-and-out real estate salesmen (including Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey) seems engineered to make life ridiculously unfair for the protagonists, but it's still powerful and very well-acted. The best scene is a cameo by Alec Baldwin, where he gives the salesteam some incentive to sell. I also think this is Baldwin's best acting work...

    I'm not a big Jack Nicholson fan, but his rants in "As Good as it Gets" are keepers:

    That bolded sentence is a Wordforge classic if I ever saw one.

    OK. So my tastes aren't particularly sophisticated. I know it's derivative of an older Russian film ("Battleship Potemkin"?), but speaking of "The Untouchables", the scene on the steps at the train station is a classic.

    In Harm's Way:

    "Oh, Rock of ages! We've got us another war...a gut bustin', mother lovin', navy war!"

    "It does shape up that way, Commander Eddington!"

    The 13th Warrior:

    The scene before the last battle where they all recite the viking prayer together, and the arab joins them after his final prayers to Allah. That's the moment his journey comes full circle- he has accepted these men as his brothers, and they him. They're in it together.

    Mulholland Falls:

    "See? That's federal property. This isn't. This is L.A. This is my town. Out here you're a trespasser. Out here I can pick you up, burn your house, fuck your wife, and kill your dog. And the only thing that'll protect you is if I can't find you. And I already found you."

    The 300, right near the beginning - "THIS! IS! SPARTA!!" It is at that precise moment you know you're going to see one kick-ass movie.

    Godzilla 1985 - The big G emerges from Tokyo bay. The whole JSDF is lined up on the docks and they unload everything they have at him. Godzilla stands there for a moment, then his back glows and he blasts out his death ray, wiping them all out in three seconds.

    The sword fight between Cary Elwes and Mandy Patankin in The Princess Bride.

    In Ladyhawk, when Michelle Pfeiffer finally faces the Cardinal in her human form, his curse broken. She stands so regally over him, and SO fucking beautiful I can't stand it, shows him the thongs that bound her when she was a bird, and drops them at his feet. The classiest "fuck you" ever.

    In Big Jake, when Maureen O'hara says the job of tracking down her grandson's kidnappers is a particularly foul and dirty job, and will require a particulary foul and dirty man, and we hard cut to:
