Then, by definition, it's not "color-blind casting." :marathon:

Yeah, they should have referred to it as "so-called color blind casting" for accuracy.

One of the hallmarks of the "liberal" or "progressive" mindset is near-total unawareness of the Law of Unintended Consequences.

As soon as someone claimed color blind casting was racist their complaint should have been thrown out as it clearly was without merit. If a student said something so stupid then they should have gotten days wortg of detention where they had to do training showing how they were no longer racist piles of shit.

If the school has a zero tolerance policy for racism then the student should have been immediately expelled for racist misconduct.

yes throwing the baby out with the bathwater is a progressive tenet. As for Vin Diesel you got that right. Not a big fan I guess you could say.
Now Duane Johnson can do action movies and bring the funny.

No, being racist and claiming only certain races can play certain parts is racism.

You are being dumber than usual here. This is no different than saying only whites can play certain parts. If you change the races leftforge would ve screaming so end your retarded double standard and just admit it is racism. Or continue being a retarded dumb ass, which ever you prefer.

Not necessarily racist, but it is an indication of privilege. Only white people have the option of “not giving a shit about race.” People of color have to deal with racism whether they want to or not. Also, when confronted with injustice “not giving a shit” isn’t exactly the most praiseworthy of reactions.

I get what you're saying. But, that's not what's being claimed here, is it?

You're saying "color-blind casting" can be racist if white actors are being cast in non-white roles but people of color aren't being cast in white roles. That's your position, right? Fair enough. I agree. That's not "color-blind casting." Is anyone alleging that's what's happened here or are you inferring that it is happening? I ask because I don't get that from the article. The student group is clearing saying that "color-blind casting" is racist. That's stupid and racist in itself.

Right. What they distinctly did not want was color-blind casting. They distinctly wanted a "person of color" to be cast as Esmeralda, all other considerations be hanged.

It's good to give a shit about real injustice, not trifling bullshit examples of injustice. Oh wait, white people aren't qualified to determine the definition of injustice unless it's brought up before the all minority "diversity committee" for approval. How could I forget that?

Well in my experience it's not been "always and "never". In my school a brown guy played Danny Zucco in the Grease play and an asian kid played Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady.

I don’t think “color blind” casting can ever truly exist. Everyone has biases, even ones they aren’t aware, that would influence their decisions. That’s why so many productions claim it had color blind casting and hired a bunch of white people for every major role with a few minority secondary characters.

I’m not sure what could be done though.

If present demographic trends continue, we'll all look the same anyway in a matter of centuries. Racism problem solved. Fortunately human beings don't discriminate on any other basis.

I'm frankly surprised the production wasn't shut down because someone on the PTA objected to "stereotyping of the differently abled."

But people weren't as in tuned to issues of sensitivity as they are now.

That's not to say anything Esmeralda with blonde hair couldn't work. As I said regarding the MJ debacle that so many shat bricks over, there's nothing wrong with an appearance change when it doesn't take away from the story. Historically speaking, white-passing Romani (the current term for gypsy today) have and still do exist and Esmerelda's role was to be the supportive, friendly voice that Quasimodo never had. She could be played by a Vulcan for all I care.

See also: the Disney production of Cinderella.

The cast had a wide cast of diverse actors, with Brandy in the lead and Whoopi Goldberg and Victor Garber playing King and Queen to an Asian Prince. An actual Korean even, and not a ginger who was passed off as one-fourth Asian.

My point was we were doing just fine before people became hyper sensitive. Nobody gave a shit.

Then again I'm talking about Canada, we just don't have the same issues with race that America does. Big part of why you guys can't have nice things. ;)

No, as long as there are any differences at all someone will always cry racism. Even if none actually exists.

FWIW, I once played Esmeralda in a Showcase production of The Skin of Our Teeth to possibly the whitest audience in Brooklyn. Split the role with a Sicilian woman who was as dark as I was pale.

Nobody said "boo." Then again, the director was known for nontraditional casting, even using interracial couples in the 1970s-80s.

I don't watch anything specifically for the sake of diversity, but one of the reasons I love Brooklyn 99 is because the casting really does seem to have been done on a colorblind "best actor for the job" basis. No one said "the two senior officers can't both be black men," or "the two female detectives can't both be latinas," they just cast the best actors for those roles.
