yeah any comments about "no race issues" from a Canadian is  when you can fit almost the whole black population into a mid sized sedan.
And yes Brooklyn 99 is awesome! I guess being military I am very much used to seeing blacks in leadership positions (especially senior NCO's) and here in Augusta the sheriff is black, the mayor is black, etc. so again it's very normal and expected. And the cast of Brooklyn 99 are about "the best of the best" when it comes to comedic acting, and the writing is razor sharp.

So in your mind Aboriginal and Asian populations don't count, only The Ones You Don't Like.

City i grew up in was basically India and the city right beside us was China. As a white guy i was the minority in grades 1-12.

And yeah, fucking rights I’ll sit on my high horse. You guys have serious issues. That’s not an insult, it just is what it is. I wish you guys saw things like we do.

No one said “no race issues” - what was said was “we don’t have the same issues with race”

Then you for some reason single out black people and it doesn’t feel like a good look that you did that

Who had a French mother in the original story.

In addition if you Google Romany you can find all sorts of colors. Including blonde and blue eyes.

The point of origin may have started out of India but centuries of mixing has resulted in a diverse group of people.

In Victor Hugo's novel, Esmeralda is the child of two white French people - an aristo and his mistress whom he abandons when she becomes pregnant. The impoverished mistress becomes a prostitute to support herself and her beloved daughter. (If this sounds familiar, Esmeralda's mom is Victor Hugo warming up for Fantine in Les Miz 30 years down the road. Neither dame can catch a break.)

Esmeralda (née Agnes) is snatched by the Gypsies who leave Quasimodo in her place. Her mother goes mad and becomes known as La Gudule, a ranting anchorite who hates Gypsies. About 10 million pages into the novel La Gudule discovers that Esmeralda is really her daughter but it's too late. La Gudule has spent her life stirring up prejudice and hatred against the Gypsies and it's come back to bite her. (Not for long though; she dies too.)

The writers of the Disney movie and the stage musical had a huge task of trimming down Hugo's book and for the most part did a pretty good job. Making Esmeralda Roma was one of many changes from the original but after all, a novel isn't a movie or a stage vehicle. I hope the kids that protested some day read the original and Hugo's point that racial hatred kills.

Color-blind casting is here to stay. Do audiences really give a damn anymore?

yes folks I do realize there are more races than just black or white. But here in the US (perhaps you've heard of the place!) the vast majority of the hotbed "racial issues" are about/between/concerning/focused on blacks & whites with a smattering of hispanic issues. Unless I blinked & missed it I see few asian/white, asian/black, hispanic/asian racial stories in the news. Yes I do listen to several news sources both left & right leaning.

Canadians if you never lived here I don't expect you to really have a feel for how it is, so I accept that. Garamet get off your high horse before you fall off and break a hip.

Yes, we had slavery but I've often said if I had a time machine but could only use it once, we would be picking our own cotton.

You lived near Indians and Chinese? That is nice. America has far more of those living there than Canada as well. Last time I checked, none of our racial problems involved them either.

75 percent of Canada is European
    14% asian
    5% indeginous
    3% carribean and latin america
    0.2% ocrana

So you can sit on your high horse all you want but you have as much credibility as you would trying to lecture Africa on their hunger problem. If your country was actually as diverse as Americas you would have the same racial problems.

Americans tend to have a pretty broad definition of "white" these days.

I was reading the book about the high school football team in Texas "Friday Night Lights" (took place in 1988). A major section of the book was about the racism in small town America (Odessa and Midland TX in this case). There was lots of animus between blacks and whites. One of the major characters was a Mexican American football player whose father was a highly successful and wealthy defense attorney. The kid had a hot white cheerleader girlfriend. Her mother who was clearly racist didn't care, saying the Mexican American kid was "close enough to white it didn't matter" IIRC.

Right? You’ve got this guy and @oldfella1962 saying “if you guys had the blacks that we do you’d have huge racial problems!”

Then they get their panties in a bunch when it’s suggested that they have more serious racial issues than other countries.

.2 percent ocrana? where the fuck is that? Are they from another planet or what?

Anyway allow me to address (sure don't want to undress) Ten Luback.
Here's a quick way to put things in perspective: were hispanics captured/sold by their own people and enslaved in the US? Not to my knowledge, if I'm wrong let me know. Were asians captured/sold by their own people and enslaved in the US? Again, I guess I slept that day in history class. So yeah, one ethnic group might have little different chip on their shoulder. Are we clear now?

Jesus 14th Doctor you must be trolling or just swallowed a bottle of high octane fast release stupid pills. :jayzus: True, no living white has ever owned a slave, and no living black has ever been a slave. So we can all put that behind us now, it's all water under the bridge. Next time there's a protest or riot over a perceived or real injustice, you can remind them to put things in perspective and chill the fuck out.

My mom's family was the definition of poor white trash. They literally lived on the wrong side of the railroad tracks from the better section of homes nearer to the Cotton Mill that employed about 50% of the town. But, even they could afford to hire a black Nanny. She would come over every morning, six days per week, and clean. She'd do the laundry, take care of my 3-4 year old aunt, and all sorts of stuff that allowed my Grandmother to enjoy her evenings. When my mom would come home from school, she'd help with the homework and have a hot supper on the table at 5:15 PM sharp when my grandparents got home from work. She'd eat with the family and then my Grandfather would drive her home.

Saturdays were different. My Grandfather would always have something on Saturdays to occupy his time so that left the women and girls to their own devices. My Grandmother would always take my mom, my aunt, and the Nanny out to lunch on Saturdays. That's where the problems started. When they would go eat, the Nanny would have to enter the building through a different door. There was a half-height wall with glass from the top of the wall to the ceiling that separated the dining rooms. Even at 6-7 years old, my mom knew this wasn't right. She wanted the Nanny to be come through the same door and sit with them. After being told dozens of times why this wasn't possible, mom started taking it upon herself to just go in the other door and eat with the Nanny. This ended up causing a different set of problems, but that's a story for another time.

My parents also went through integration in High School. Thankfully, we never had any serious problems here. There was, of course, the "black high school" and the "high school." In an uncommon bit of progressive wisdom at the time, the School Board appointed the "black high school" Principal, a black man who would later become Mayor and is currently my parent's neighbor, to lead the High School when they integrated the schools. Further, they made the Head Football Coach the Vice Principal. These two men worked very closely to make sure everything went smoothly because punishment was certain, swift, and devastating. My folks said that the Principal and Vice Principal would walk the halls with baseball bats to make their intent clear. That said, Mom and Dad maintain that they only remember one incident. A white male student lifted the skirt of a black female student. He was stopped by the Vice Principal before anything was revealed and he was immediately expelled.

So, yeah. Not only is this sort of thing still in living memory, I'm only one generation removed from it. My son is only two generations removed from it. I still see evidence of it every week.

I've known a man for over 20 years. He was an "old black man" when I met him. He's even older now. He's a good, kind man. A hard working, honest man. For years, he'd come by the Station once a week or so and have a cup of coffee and chat. Now that he knows where I'm at again, he comes by the store on the same schedule and we still have that cup of coffee.

I've adjusted to it now, but to this day I still see something in his demeanor that I don't like. It's ingrained forced humbleness. Even though he's 40+ years my senior, he'd never walk through a door before me. He always walks two paces behind and to left of me when we're walking together. He always holds his hat in his hands in front of his body in a submissive posture. He never makes eye contact with a white man. He's never once called me by my first name. I gave up trying 15 years ago. He will always calls me Sgt. or Mr. Blues and he requires me to call him William.

I love William. There's not a lot of men like William any more. In some ways, that's a bad thing. We need his honesty, genuine kindness, and integrity. But, in other ways, it's good.

Well yeah, you just proved my initial point that we don’t have the same racial issues as you do.

Too bad you’re spending your time here posting news stories of exclusively black people committing crimes instead of doing something about the chip on their shoulder, but whatever

Garamet actually helped illustrate my point: yes, there is still racism & injustice! Is that bad? Yes it is. You wanted to know why most of the more intense racial issues
involve whites and blacks. History counts, baggage counts. Your country does not have that history and baggage, full stop.
No matter how much racial equality the US achieves that history will always remain. If you could wave a magic wand and suddenly all shreds of racism were gone the scars will remain, history won't change. Bottom line it doesn't take a genius to figure out that if the US has millions of blacks that have this shared history that more than a few might view things through this same lens, and their lives are still shaped (in a negative way) by the repercussions of racism.

That's (spoiler alert) the way things are here in the US and things are not in Canada. We as a nation face a much greater challenge in this arena than you do.
You want me to "do something" to achieve racial equality then perhaps you can tell me what you are doing about it on your side of the border.

My grandmother had a black maid named Belle. When I was a toddler, my parents got divorced so we stayed with the grandparents for a while, and Belle pretty much took care of my sister and me while my mom went to college. She used to bounce me on her knee and say, "Oh yo is yo Momma's little chocolate baby!"
