Been plenty of times there have been two Cat-4 storms out there. Usually though one sucks up all the energy first and the second one like Jose turns north.

And Cat-4 storms have hit America back to back within weeks of each other.

What is rare is two storms (of any strength) hitting the same state very close to each other in time.

Hurricane Charley and Tropical Storm Bonnie both hit Florida within 24 hours of each other in 2004.

That link lists all of the recorded hurricanes that have been Category 4. There are several examples of Cat-4 hurricanes in the Atlantic at the same time. Just at different windspeeds.

Like right now Irma is actually a Cat-3. She's hitting Cuba. When she starts to get further from the coast of Cuba this afternoon she will go back to 4 and possibly a five.
