Switching to anecdotal mode: The Syrian dentist I met two weeks ago isn't allowed to work for money, but he's as desperate to get his mind off what's happening back home as he is to work, so he joined the voluntary fire brigade here. At least running into fires and carrying out kids is something we'll let him do, as long as he promises to take no money for it, ever.

Yes, I made a mistake in thinking that he only meant Syrian refugees (approximately 150,000). I haven't looked at numbers from other origin points, though.

Actually, they are well over a million so far this year. The government said it was projecting 1.5 million but things slowed down after countries started putting border controls into place.
