I think we should do something about hipster culture. We should start by nuking Seattle from orbit.:bergman:

Is hardcore nerd culture misogynist? No, not necessarily. Maybe in the way beta males are inherently misogynist.

Is it awkward or obsessive? Does it lack the necessary social norms that keeps some of it's basement dwelling denizens from being a little pushy? Probably.

Ah, here is the problem, you haven't read the summary article I posted where the author breaks it down.

And I didn't claim either, so way to strawman.

    Again you strawman.
Nowhere did I claim anyone (including myself) should be exempt from criticism.
That you saw fit to equate guys with Trek posters up as equivalent to White Nationalists just adds whacko sauce to the fallacy sundae.

Except that I did, because how else would I have gotten to the summary?

You clearly haven't because you are unable to spot that said article simply discusses the findings, not how they were arrived at. If you disagree, tell me how many people they interviewed? Or even if they interviewed people? Where? Among which demographic? Inside or outside of institutions?

You try to hard. You really do, chasing people from thread to thread, saying stupid untrue bull shit. It is like you do not value your time nor better things to do. Can't you go down to your local mosque and find a new terrorist to date or have they all rejected you as well?

Oh a more serious note, you obsessive compulsive behavior is what got you put on ignore last time. Have you learned nothing? Are you even capable of learning? Social skills really are not something you seem to do well.

You put me on ignore (well, pretended to anyway) because you are too intellectually weak to respond to any detailed discourse, as you have proven clearly once again over the past 48 after demanding meaningful discussion and then running away like the little bigoted pussy you are because you didn't know how to answer. You pretended to have me on ignore so that you could spout your racist trash openly without having to respond to people calling you on it. Had @gul not been a mod I have little doubt you'd have tried the same with him.

Oh, and that you are a bigot is not a lie. If it were, multiple people wouldn't have recognised it and you wouldn't be relying on fruitcakes like gtardo or Ramen to support you, people who you once upon a time ridiculed.

Okay, so you either don't trust the study or don't trust the summary of results. Nor do you trust the raw numbers showing that implementing the suggestions coincided with increased female graduation in CS to the highest in country.

Instead you trust your feelings about Star Trek.

    Okay.

If you feel I have mischaracterized your attempts at arguments, then please lay them out.

Here is the original piece, summarizing the study:
    http://qz.com/823162/a-new-study-sh...ake-women-feel-unwelcome-in-computer-science/

Please lay out what you disagree with and explain why, using evidence when possible.

I don't read any quantified results in the summary. The claim is that they found women expressed less interest after interacting with a nerd. That doesn't necessarily translate into higher enrollment. And though the University of Washington has the highest rate of women receiving degrees in computer science, there's no evidence presented that this is because of de-nerdification of the department culture. Washington is, after all, one of the biggest states for opportunities in the software field, so should I take it on faith that taking down Star Trek posters works?

And, again, EVEN IF it improved enrollment of women, what about the costs? To wit: SUPPRESSING the local culture? Denying the many the enjoyment and celebration of their culture in order to make the program more attractive to the very few seems very heavy-handed to me.

How far down this road would you be willing to go?

So let me be sure I am understanding you correctly.

You feel that having entry llevel classes having art and nature posters instead of sci-fi, that having women TAs, and having professors email high achievers, is SUPPRESSION of nerd culture?

    Suppression.

Liberals love to fix things and make people "better" through ever-improved social engineering. Sometimes it even works. Rarely though, usually it just ends up providing a few extra jobs that weren't needed and didn't exist before we became so fat and rich (like college stress counselors).

<<The efforts have paid off. Last year, the proportion of undergraduate computer science degrees going to women at the University of Washington, 32%, was higher than any other public flagship university in the country. >>

Wouldn't drawing conclusions about success and causal link be premature until that 32% of women settled into a career? And if a (disproportionately) large chunk all failed miserably wouldn't that mean another failure for the elitist head-up-ass liberal social engineers who think they can fix anything if they just have enough paper and bureaucrats (and public money of course)?

    /fuckin w you.

If the cost is just posters, then more power to them. I don't mind if they fuck up some people's lives if it doesn't cost me anything.

If you need authority to make it happen, it's suppression. It sure isn't voluntary.

Edit: also, your implication is that I'm against woman TAs or having professors e-mail high achievers, and I'm not. Those things can exist/happen without any silly de-nerdification program.

Please explain how public universities making sure their programs are inclusive (to half the population!) is in any way oppressive?!?!?

We're talking about public universities here. They have the right to decide what goes up on their classroom walls and what teaching methods are used.

This entire thread reminds me of the saying: "To the privileged equality feels like oppression."
