True true, and one of the great concerns around the world at the end of the Civil War is what would the USA now do with the largest, best equiped, most advanced Army in the world. Poor Mexico wouldn't have known what hit it.

No, not quite third world. More like Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal, Greece, Southern Italy).

Essentially what happened to France, which is why Napoleon high tailed it out of there in 1865.

Especially with land empires being so en vogue in those days, we might have had a United States of North America.

A United States rid of the CSA probably have been somewhat more likely to secure union with Canada. The American Civil War and the confederation of Canada came in the same decade.

If we're gonna be all anecdotal about it, my grandmother who lives in Memphis usually complains about the increased numbers of blacks. And her father (or father in-law, I forget which) was a member of the KKK. My dad was taken to some of the meetings as a child, but thankfully never got into it. He got the fuck out of the south as soon as he turned 18.

I live in the most racially integrated major city in America (according to Time and the US Census), and the only racism I've ever experienced was from Russian/Slavic immigrants who seemingly don't like blacks.
