Black powder is nasty on a weapon. I've read accounts of the CW where the front ranks would be shooting and the rear ranks would be cleaning rifles.

When a front rank's rifle started clogging up, the soldier would pass it back to the rear for cleaning and the rear rank would pass up a clean rifle to use in the meantime.

They also had a special minie ball that served as a scraper to scrape the crap out of the barrel. Every so many cartridges contained a scraper instead of a regular minie ball.

I suspect you oil it every now and then.

Keep the metal well oiled and conditioned and it'll probably last forever. WD-40 is your friend.
