I got a lot of neg rep a while ago for suggesting that maybe the reason why a lot of the pro gun lobby were fascinated by them for no other reason than them being an extension of their machismo, therefore ultimately having little to do with the right to bear arms. What I've found interesting is that all the talk of guns, and what makes a nice one to own, etc, comes from the men. I don't think I've ever seen a pro-gun American woman talk about carrying around a gun in public or discussing her collection. So, if one puts aside the "right to bear arms -v- gun banning" argument for a minute is it right to say that guns are often sought in the same manner as fast cars? Are they compensatory? Are they an extension of ego? Are thay a status symbol? I'm not really sure about this one since it's different over here.
I think it's mainly a case of boys and their toys. Damn things are fun. Get to play cops and robbers an' stuff. Other than that, the ability to wield absolute control over an opponent is heady stuff. I'm not sure why you would want to unless you're lacking self-esteem.
It's common for people to ridicule things and concepts they're afraid of, such as inanimate objects and takings steps to secure one's own safety other than relying on others. Subconsciously, they may feel the same, but are too lazy or unsure of themselves, so they dismiss the whole enterprise altogether and go about their day secure in their warm blanket of naivety.
The mood swings will subside when you stop taking those illegal estrogen pills by the fist full, shemale.
How does a lack of self esteem enter into the equation of "you versus an armed intruder in your house?" Will you feel better about yourself if you let him kill you and rape your wife?
Oh do fuck off, I asked a perfectly legitmate question which you don't see to be able to address. I was not looking for a "guns are bad" debate. "Because I can" is not enough of an explnanation for me on the issue when you think of the all the crap people get for driving flashy cars.
I see nothing wrong at all w/owning & carrying a gun for protection,.. but the guys who constantly brag about their 'big ole guns' is a bit over the top. JMO, of course. <shrugs>
How does that extend to the desire to carry one in public outside the confines of your house? You and I well know that the question I asked has nothing to do with the right to defend your property. If that's all there was to it then a gun would be nothing more than a functional item such as a burgler alarm. But on here we get people posting about their collections, how beautiful some guns or and that the want, need or desire to carry them out in public, outside the confines of their own home. That is what I am trying to talk about, not falling back into the same "constitutional right, bad guy at the front door" bullshit that's been done to death.
No one has anything to justify to you, Chup. You don't have to understand. If you had a legitimate question to ask, you wouldn't proceed from the position of mockery and ridicule. You're getting exactly what you fucking deserve for this transparent bullshit. So no one ever has cause to defend themself outside of their home?
These guys move from house to car to destination. They are unaccustomed to spending any real time on the streets, so they imagine all sorts of hobgoblins waiting around each corner.
No logical reason is required. "Just because" is a perfectly acceptable reason, whether you approve of it or not. And even if your "point" were to be taken seriously, you can't invoke logic while offering a false dichotomy as the only choices. The options are not limited to "penis extension" or "sterile, airtight logic". Don't project your cognitive limitations on others. Do people who wear seat belts crash their cars every day? Do people in helmets bail off of their motorcycles at freeway speeds all the time? Do I hit a punching bag because I have a daily need to beat someone up? Obviously not. Preparedness is not about constant use, fear, insecurity, or paranoia. There is no rational basis for this "point," either. You've got jack shit in this one. Give it up.
Okay, People carry outside the home for the same reason they have a gun inside the home - in case a bad guy attacks them. Don't need to go much deeper than that. Collectors? Why do collectors of ANYthing collect things? Porcelain Figurines, comic books, old cars, crystal goblets, dinnerware with Star Trek actors painted on them, autographs, DVds... People collect things because they're interested in them, they like them, they think they look nice, or they're fun to have or use. Don't need to get any deeper than that. If you wanted a serious discussion you probably should have picked a less insulting (and obsolete) thread title.
"Armed to the Teeth" is an obviously pejorative (and cliched) expression. Define "armed to the teeth." If Shoes carries one single .45 with two reloads to the store, is he "armed to the teeth"? Me, I hear "armed to the teeth," I think a shotgun an/or AR-15, a sidearm, a backup handgun, a belt full of reloads, a fighting knife, a push-dagger, a PR-24, pepper spray, and a derringer - and the knife has to be actually in my teeth to qualify for the expression. And even all that doesn't qualify in my mind for the favorite newscaster expression, "An arsenal!!!!111!!"
[Q] "And now Bond, I want you to carry this...." [Bond] "You're joking, Q!" [Q} "I never joke about my work, 007. Now unzip..."
I agree with Forbin's post up above about collectors of anything. Though, sometimes it seems gun owners are especially obsessive about their gun collections. Well, that and the few gun collectors I've known in person were kinda nutty. Though, for some as well it seems like their lives revolve around guns. /shrug To each their own, live and let live. That certainly doesn't speak of all gun collectors though, Forbin seems like a decent guy.
Where do I ridicule it? For what it's worth, if guns were legal in Britain I'd probably own one myself. But again, that's not the point of my question.
