turn off the "if you change a file name extension . . ." warning that pops up every time you change a file name extension, and if so, how? I've always found this pop-up much more annoying than useful, and decided that I finally just want to get rid of it, but there isn't any obvious way to do so and a quick google search wasn't helpful.
No easy way. You would need to hex edit explorer.exe and shell32.dll, both have entries for that warning. And if you messed it up just slightly windows would need to be reinstalled or repaired
If you search someone should have something you just type in from a command line to edit those. Just backup your registry first!
Thanks to all for the help. I guess it doesn't annoy me enough to risk hacking critical system files, especially given my limited hacking abilities. I occasionally change extensions to control file associations or when backing up individual files, and I was hoping we were far enough removed from the DOS days when extensions were much more generally system critical that there'd be an easy way around that warning.
Speaking as a long-time dual-booter, who really loves Linux, it really isn't all that great... Unless you enjoy tinkering around with computers just for the the fun of it, there's not a lot of point to Linux. There is barely anything that I can do on linux that I can't do on my windows install. However, I have a lot of stuff that I use regularly that doesn't run on linux. When it comes down to it, it's more of a fun toy than anything else.
