Is This Really the Best Usage of Will Smith's Time?

You know, I thought 'Legend' was sorta okay. Not great, not Earth-shaking...just okay. Didn't see 'Hancock,' but reviews pretty universally called it meh. So I have to wonder: are these really the things Will Smith should be doing with his career?

He's 40 now (geez, I can't believe that). He doesn't have too many more summer blockbusters left in him before he's either forced to evolve into more mature leading man parts or gets relegated to comic relief and sidekick roles.

If Will Smith wants to play a superhero again, for God's sakes, someone get him a decent Green Lantern script. If he wants to do an apocalyptic zombie movie--AGAIN--let's see something fresh, not a prequel to 'Legend.' It's not like we're going to worry Neville is going to die in it...

I Am Legend was good, I thought, if you incorporate the "alternate" (original) ending. Otherwise, it is thoroughly meh.

Hancock, however, just plain sucked balls. Started out promising and fizzled in about 30 minutes.

Christ. The fact that these two movies get sequels, while no one even remembers "The Incredible Hulk", is kind of depressing.

HANCOCK... I expected fun. I mean, great premise, drunk superhero and all. And then, they turn it all serious :(

Why not? If he can break the $100k mark with these movies and enjoy doing them, good on him.

I don't know that that's true. If Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis can be featured in want-to-be summer blockbusters in their 60s and 70s, I don't see why Will Smith couldn't. Especially if he continues to look younger than his actual age.

In fairness, it's not often we worry that Will Smith's character is going to die because he's Will Smith. In fact, I think the character in "Legend" was the first time I've seen one of his characters die on screen.

And I thought Neville was an interesting enough character that I wouldn't mind seeing him again.

    I think you mean $100M.

I'm just saying he's a talented guy and should try to break some new ground. "I am Legend Part 0" and "Hancock 2" ain't it.
Bruce Willis is 53 and says in the commentary for 'Live Free or Die Hard' that filming was very hard on him and that he didn't think he could continue doing those kinds of films much longer. The action films Harrison Ford's done in recent years have not been terribly well-received partly due to the star's age, though, admittedly, he was pretty up to par in the latest Indiana Jones film (at least IMHO).

Yes, Will Smith does look younger than his age and he's in good enough shape that he can continue doing action movies for a while, but I want them to be GOOD action movies. It's not so much him making sequel that I mind; it's that the sequels are to movies largely unworthy of having sequels.
True, Smith does not often die. In fact, I can't think of a role other than IAL where he does die... But even so, just the possibility existing makes a new movie more exciting. With a prequel, we'll know how it must end.
Neville was a decent character and Smith did a good job portraying the gradual insanity setting in from isolation. But since we already know the whole story from flashbacks and how Neville ultimately dies, i don't think a prequel is going to do more than deliver more of the same. Are we going to see Neville interacting with people? Kinda conflicts with what was established in IAL. More monster conflict and experimentation? Seen it.

^I think there's huge gaps in the movie between when the cancer cure is established, NY is quarantined, and the whole city is a wasteland.

I could see an interesting movie in filling in those gaps. When did people realize that the zombies were rising? How did Neville and others respond? What happened to the other 7 million or so people who didn't escape NY? How did Neville develop his routine to stay ahead of the zombies?

Tons of questions are out there for such a movie to address. Just because we ultimately know that Neville survives to fight a day doesn't stop that movie from being worthwhile, just like the fact that we know John Connor survives to stop the machines, or that Indy stops the Nazis in "Raiders" and therefore doesn't die in an obscure Indian village, and so forth.

Prequels suck. I'd rather have surprise endings (ha, ha) than some forces BS story with a known ending. IAL has a sequel in it, without Will Smith tho.

He'll be well compensated for his time. Will Hancock II be a critically acclaimed masterpiece? Probably not but remember this is how he makes a buck.

Was Meet the Fockers, Hide and Seek or The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle the best use of Robert De Niro's time? Maybe, maybe not, you'd have to ask him, one things certain though these three flicks didn't deny movie-goers other flicks of a higher quality.

As for Will Smith's age, at forty it isn't an issue. There have been many action stars who made action movies well after turning forty. Take a look a Sylvester Stallone he made all of these films after turning forty:
    • Rambo (2008)
    • Rocky Balboa (2006)
    • Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003))
    • Shade (2003/I)
    • Taxi 3 (2003)
    • Avenging Angelo (2002)
    • D-Tox (2002
    • Driven (2001)
    • Get Carter (2000)
    • Antz (1998) (voice)
    • Cop Land (1997)
    • The Good Life (1997)
    • Daylight (1996)
    • Assassins (1995)
    • Judge Dredd (1995)
    • The Specialist (1994)
    • Demolition Man (1993)
    • Cliffhanger (1993)
    • Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992)
    • Oscar (1991)
    • Rocky V (1990)
    • Tango & Cash (1989)
    • Lock Up (1989)
    • Rambo III (1988)
    • Over the Top (1987)
    • Cobra (1986)

The last time he played Rambo he was sixty-one years old.

Will Smith has plenty of time left.

To each his own I guess, sure there are some clunkers on there but the point is that Mr. Stallone's age wasn't a factor.

A convincing argument IMO, I enjoyed a lot of Stalone's movies over the past couple of decades.

That's just it.... he does look his age, IMHO. Especiallly in Hancock. I am a few years behind him and Jada and feel like I kind of grew up with him being a huge fan of D.J. Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. Seeing Hancock made me realize that I'm on the verge of being "older." :(

Like I explained To Dan, it ain't about quality it's about the fact that age wasn't an issue. So what if Will Smith is turning forty? He's got plenty of years left.

Of course they did go for that look, him being a drunk and all. Same thing in I AM LEGEND - he's a worn down character in both. I think he still looks  worthy.

Considering it was Charlize Theron who said it, I'd have to say...

I have a sweet video of her topless in a pool in "Reindeer Games".

BTW, Charlize and Will makes me think of a certain David Allen Coe song. :soholy:

I've been thinking about this one, and I've come to the conclusion that as long as we get a Will Smith in the shower scene, I don't care if they do a prequel, alternate universe version, or what. ;)
