I know there are some people who feel that way but I don't think they've got a Biblical leg to stand on. I just don't see it in the Old or the New Testaments. Next time you have this discussion with one of them, ask them about David and Bathsheba and the death of their first child. I believe God will forgive you for your sins if you sincerely ask but you're not always spared the consequences of your previous actions. My beliefs along these lines are why I'm always glad when I hear of a jailhouse conversion but I'm still hard-nosed enough to insist that the criminal pay their debt to society.

I'm not bashing 'true' christianity - as in the things that Jesus Christ professed.

What I'm saying is, every harm we inflict on others - be it in word or deed - will come back to us. Regardless of whether or not we are on the path of Christianity or something else.

Number one reason I don't believe the whole gimmick.

It just sounded like you were put off the whole thing by their beliefs. Like I said earlier, I think our actions will eventually come back to us. Not necessarily in this life but I think God will insist on justice for those whose wrongs haven't been covered in His plan.

I'm skeptical but sometimes people do need an exceptionally sharp rap on the head. :)

I don't believe in jailhouse conversions.

I especially don't believe in 'death row' conversions.

On those days when I'm a better person, I do too.

On days like today when I'm feeling ... ehh ... I like to throw out some of my best judgement calls.

And to think that William Shatner considered letting her have the role of Cassandra when he was going to do JULIUS CEASAR, the musical. Course, he was gonna play all the other roles. (Free Enterprise)

At any rate, for someone who is such good friends with the Dalai Lama, Ms. Stone appears to have zero understanding of what karma means in a Buddhist context.

Hint, it has nothing whatever to do with bad things happening to bad people and good things happening to good people.
But the "Basic Instinct" actress had a change of heart when she got a letter from the Tibetan Foundation saying the organization wanted to be helpful to the quake victims. Stone was humbled.

"That made me cry," she said. "Sometimes you have to learn to put your head down and be of service, even to people who aren't nice to you. That's a big lesson for me."
I think we are missing the point. She had a humbling change of heart and realized she should be helping. It would be nice if more people could LEARN from their mistakes and CHANGE.

IIRC, it's more like a person's actions determines their future and every action has consquence.

It's supposed to teach you to be more mindful of what you do and think.

I'm pretty sure that's close anyway.

very close.

It's a lot more involved than this, but here it is in a nutshell.

I'm not Buddhist, but most of it is similar to the way I think.

Which is actually another miscommunication/misinterpretation... the afterlife.

Most ideas of karma infer an indirect reaction to your actions. That is, you screw over person B they might forgive you or never catch on. But by the time it gets back to you, we've gone through the alphabet twice.

The other thing is that you have this shiny reward based on earthly piety or a realm of suffering. Seems to be a handy way to avoid the consequences while in this life if you're forgiven by proxy.

Christians don't avoid consequences of their actions just by appealing to God - unless He chooses to for reasons of his own. Besides, it's not by our actions, good or bad, that they are made right with God.

Well, that's convenient.

So if something bad happens to me, it must be karma, even if I don't realize it.

Okay. Sure. And when good things happen to me when I do bad stuff, that must be karma too.

Sorry, I just can't by that. Good things and bad things happen to everybody. Ascribing some cosmic balancing act to it is just a way to feel like justice still gets done, somehow, to people who get away with bad things.

And if it makes you feel better to believe that there is justice out there for people who escape punishment, then more power to you. I won't deny you your comforts. But I don't buy into the idea of it one bit. Mostly cause it's just another way to control people. Be good, or else KARMA /GOD / ALLAH / XENU is gonna getcha.

I don't 'be good' because I'm afraid of karma, I try to be the best person I can be so my life (and any future incarnations) will be easier. We make our own heaven and our own hell.

And not only that, why would one deliberately be mean to someone else?

Ah, well see, you don't do it out of fear. You do it for the reward ;) You do it for the hope that if you're good enough, karma will make your life easier.

As for why I'd be deliberately mean, I'm not. But I'm not deliberately good, either. It really depends on how much I like or dislike a person.

Desert loving in your eyes all the way
If I listen to your lies would you say
I'm a man without conviction
I'm a man who doesn't know
How to sell a contradiction
You come and go
You come and go

Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon
You come and go
You come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dream
Red, gold and green
Red, gold and green

Didn't hear your wicked words every day
And you used to be so sweet I heard you say
That my love was an addiction
When we cling our love is strong
When you go you're gone forever
You string along
You string along

Every day is like a survival
Youre my lover not my rival
Every day is like a survival
Youre my lover not my rival

I'm a man without conviction
I'm a man who doesn't know
How to sell a contradiction
You come and go
You come and go

Ha. Get that out of your heads!
