I AM waiting for the collapse of society - not just the US, but the entire thing. Level the playing field. No hold outs. The human race needs a reset.

Cuz if it's one the The Dark Ages did, was reset.
No picking right up where we left off; nope, totally alien society out of thin air.
    Yep.

We now have achieved the lowest rate of death by war, death by preventable diseases, death by starvation, lowest rate of folks living in extreme poverty, highest educational rate IN THE HISTORY OF HUMANITY.

    This bullshit cannot stand!

    We must reset!

Lots of boring white middle class losers have a power fantasy of society collapsing so they can become leaders and heroes and anything but the disappointing nobodies they really are during the aftermath. It's not quite as depressing as the bitter losers that fantasize about a civil war so they can shoot anyone that's ever made them feel small without going to jail, but it's still pretty pathetic. :async:

You are the one who said we need a reset, what did that mean if not the obvious interpretation?

I’m not sure what the obvious interpretation is, but I was thinking about our current society as it exists. There is no “sanctity of life”. People kill each other all the time and it’s acceptable - in war, capital punishment, whatever. The wealthy taking advantage of existing society by forcing people into laboring for very little gain. Wars all over the planet. Yea, I think we need to go back to the fucking beginning and start over.

I recently watched an interview with the late Dame Diana Rigg. Post-Avengers one of her projects was playing a lead role in "Medea". As she pointed out a 2,500 year old play can still be relevant to a modern audience. Just how far back do you think we'd have to go to change human nature enough to make a difference in today's reality?

Star Trek was hopeful about the future, it's an expression of utopia, not dystopia.

And it's pretty clear to most of us we need to go forward, not back.

But hey, if you want to give up your rights to vote, have a bank account, have freedom of speech, and be forced to social conformity through religion, be my guest.

Funny, last I checked, science fiction was about progress, not regress. My mistake, apparently.

Ayup. So Demi can apologize for that dumbrep, since my point was O2C made a generalisation as a blanket declaration.

And we all know how much Demi hates blanket declarations, unless he's making them about Palestinians.

Are you suggesting that none of those franchises display any sort of technical or scientific progression?

And as I understand it, Starship Troopers and Warhammer are supposed to be cautionary examples about what the author considers the bad kind of progress.

Yes, I don't know how you can deny seeing the progress they made in their ability to kill bugs from the start of the movie to the end. And now they have a brain bug to study!!

    Nu BSG
    Voyager
    Fahrenheit 451
    1984

    I could name 50 more.

But, that isn’t really the issue, is it? The issue is that you want to paint me into some corner which, I can only guess is some redneck militia bs. Whatever. To which I’d respond that you don’t know me at all. So …, go ahead, think as you’d like. Moron.

What the fuck. This idiocy should seriously be its own thread.

The fuck does Sci-Fi as an explainer for a ‘reset’ have to do with Russia’s imperialist ambitions?

Anyway we don’t have to go to Sci-Fi to know that ‘resets’ LITERALLY NEVER IMPROVE ANYTHING AND JUST DELAY SOCIETAL PROGRESS we can move a couple sections over at the library to a place called ‘History’.

Unfortunately Jennie isn’t the first fucking idiot to think a societal reset will fix everything. I’ll ignore accidental resets like the Late Bronze Age Collapse or the fall of the Western Roman Empire/‘Dark Ages’ but THIS FUCKING CENTURY we have examples of how well intentional ‘resets’ fucking work.

Eight years ago China reached the % of global GDP they had in 1920.

Eight years ago China reached the % of global GDP they had in 1920.

Eight years ago China reached the % of global GDP they had in 1920.

That’s what Mao’s reset bought them.

30 million dead and a century of delay.

    Ever heard of Cambodia?

How did Pol Pot’s reset where he sent everyone in the cities out to be farmers and pulled illiterate farmers out to be businessmen and bureaucrats end up working out for Cambodians?

Compared to Mao in raw numbers there was significantly less death but it also didn’t end up in a utopia.

    Fuck.

    Seriously.

We are having a conversation over whether ending civilization would be a good thing for humanity or not?!?!?

Actually, WH40K regresses its science. It's NOT about progress. It's about regression. I'm playing Devil's Advocate with Jenee's argument but unless all tech stops functioning, all a "reset" is gonna do is kill us all or end up in a Mad Max scenario.

The WH40K Imperium have more advanced toys that we do, but lack the scientific method that led to developing them.

Nothing in my post had anything to do with Russia. So, whatever nonsense you and O2C are punting, it has nothing to do with me, so …. Later.
